Udupi, Sep 30:
MLA Raghupathy Bhat inaugurated the work on the new district headquarters that is being developed at End Point in Manipal, on Tuesday September 30.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhat said that the construction of the new district headquarters would cost around Rs 19.90 crore and is being executed by Devi Prasad Construction Private Limited, Bangalore.

The Ambagilu–Perampalli–Manipal End Point road will be broadened to provide easy access to the district headquarters from all directions. Besides, a bus terminus will also be erected close to the complex for the convenience of commuters.

The new building will be ready by April 2009 and is likely to be inaugurated in ring May.  It will house all government departments, zilla panchayat, taluk panchayat, office of district-in-charge minister, as well as information and broadcasting.

Meanwhile, an indoor stadium will be built at Ajjarkad at a cost of Rs 2.25 crore, added Bhat. Municipal councilor Dinakar Shetty, member Ravi Amin, and contractor Vasudev Shetty, were present.

Regarding Dr Kiran Acharya's comment about the history of tiles: Plebot, the supposed name of the German missionary, doesn't even sound German. Many sites on the internet carry this same 'Plebot' related information without any indication of the source for it. For a good discussion of the history of the Basel Mission's activities, including that related to the tile factory, please see http://www.children-of-bangalore.com/basel.htm Just because something shows up on the internet (including Wikipedia) does not mean it is true. You really have to evaluate the source and the strength of its expertise.

Response to Nancy Mascarenhas,Mangalore/USA.... Cool down!!! Print media can make or break a community" says Bennet Vaz, he is absolutely right, doesn't matter which community he belongs to, but remember always politicians & the media will shine, more newspapers will be sold, more visitors(hits)to the websites, more advertisements published[this is what happened to daijiworld few days back - server problem(if I am not wrong)]. I do have a doubt, whether you belongs to catholic community, as they are always peace lovers, they do not pounce on anyone.

All future archtectures should match the local heritage. One should not dispute the architecture as long as it is eco friendly & with all amenities. We must say "NO" to the buildings which resembles "Match Box"

Dear Mr. Kiran Udupi. I have given my comments based on the observation of the architect seen in Daijidubai and Dr. Kiran Acharya already clarified. Pls go through my confirmation for the same message. How come you come to the conclusion of negative remarks in spite of my agreement with Dr. Kiran Acharya's clarification?

"Print media can make or break a community as docile as ours" says Bennet Vaz. I don't know which community you belong to but I am a Catholic. My community, my church, my sentiments all are broken by the recent attacks. I have shown my other cheek and they have beaten that one too. What is next? I used to wear bangles, now I am not.(I don't know about you) I am a wounded Tigress ready to pounce on anyone. It takes long long time for me to heal.

Thanks to everybody putting efforts to construct a healthy and peaceful Udupi. Roads are maidans now with ponds here and there. Anyway, hope better future for Udupi and Mangalore the earlier Dakshina Kannada District. My suggestion is that our Government offices should be more like modern technology than heritage houses.

Mr. Harold D'cunha - Enough is Enouh - For Christ's sake stop attributing RELIGIOUS motvations for what looks like a CLASSIC ARCHITECTURAL MARVEL. A lot of unpleasnent discusion is being indulged in F2F for the simple reason that half baked "THOUGHTS" are put in print - please folks look at each issue for what it is worth - not just to see your name in print.

Nobody should have any problem with the architecture. No doubt it is a contemporary design with a blend of tulunadu culture, without forgetting fact that the clay roof, which Mangalore provided worldwide atleast for last two centuries. Manipal I believe is the right place for the decongestion of the city traffic.

The project should have been commissioned long long ago. Any how best wishes to every one who were involved in it. Every government office is a temple of God. I hope this building is not haunted by B.Dal terrorist and Ghost of Padmapriya. Better find some real Holy people to clean it up. Since money spent is of taxpayers comprising of all relegion, cast, and creed a better way of showing unity in diversity is offering prayers from all relegions.

Many lobbies had prevented the DC office complex at Manipal.

    1. The site is located opposite Manipal university VC`s residence- not in end point as being projected (end point is further 1.5 km away)- for those arriving from Ambagilu road, it may be easier to reach present site!

2.Bus services/ support services are usually started after a structure is made...(there is no bus etc., are petty comments by people with no vision for future!)

3.This building also will be away from hustle and bustle of traffic, and will have plenty of parking place.

4.All government offices will be housed here (the lobbies which rent out their buildings with no parking or other facilities to government are quite disturbed by this!)-Why should govt pay rent when it has its own land?

    5. It is a shame on "educated" udupi, still debating on these, when places like Koppal(http://www.koppal.nic.in/), Haveri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mohanrao_Sudi2.jpg)have already have their magnificent administrative offices! -check links for images

     6. I have also visited UAE. All office buildings of the government are well planned, and are away from the city center-with space for future expansion. Perhaps the best example for an administrative set up being away from the city is -Putrajaya, admin capital of Malaysia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putrajaya)

To Harold D'Cunha, though you made recent(second) comments, you're still immature... you need to travel more not in the middle-east or europe, but in India itself... starting from UDUPI... Please do not make those nasty comments... church.. temple.. mosque.. etc. Do not forget that Udupi District got the name & fame from its religious background. Feel happy for the project not jealous.

Nice Architecture. But, udupi is the district head quarters & manipal is far from udupi. Majority people do not have Their own car / Bike. Usually they use to travel by bus only. Everyone can come from any corner of udupi district directly to udupi by using only one bus, no need to use one more connecting bus. Incase of manipal it is not possible. Its difficult, time consuming & expensive to reach this building. The next thing is about the architecture. I hope after hundreds of years someone will not start research on this building to find out, this belongs to whom? & also I hope that Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Dalits & other lower cast people can also enter this building. (no need to submit their application in the gate).

I really agree with Dr.Kiran Acharya. We should feel proud for having this mega project. Why waste negative coments on this project? We should think good, then God also will do good for us. Something may take place at some places, and this should not be equated to this beautiful project. Its nice to see some of my close friends in the above photographs. Thanks to Daijiworld for covering this artistically.

The architecture looks beautiful. classic tulunadu style as it should be . Udupi is a temple city after all. We are used to the bland British office buildings which have no meaning.  And by the way- BAsel Mission tiles point is well taken. Very true- ITS all about the architecture.

Look Mr.Harold D`cunha, when Kempegowda built vidanasoudha, it had a beautiful gopura in the centre. Is that a temple or mosque. People like you you are the main culprit for disturbing the ignition thinking. Even udupi railway station was build based on the traditional arcitecture which looks like gopura.

I am affirad whether you or not that was built during Congress govenment at center, so called psedo secular party. Please expand your knowledge and try to understand the world rather than sitting in mangalore and tuning the local news.

As Mr.Opra of Australia and Mr.Walter of UK mentioned it would look like temple beacuse Udupi is temple city. I am impressed with architecture. It does not look like cement Jungle at least after completion. All the best MLA and Contractor.

    1. We should be happy that the project has finally taken off, in spite of irrational protests.

    2. The architecture of this building is native Tulunad architecture- with cladding of Mangalore tiles- a contribution by Basel mission (little history: A German Missionary Plebot set up the first tile factory in 1865, after he found large deposits of clay by the banks Gurupur and Nethravathi Rivers.

It was called Basel Mission Tile factory and located on the banks of the river Nethravathi, around 100 meters away from Ullal Bridge)- so please do not bring the issue of religion here!

The new Head quarters of Udupi district looks like some finishing like temple structure. Is this is secular culture? Even in Middle East the Government buiding does not have religious structure. Are we moving backward or forward?
