Mangaluru: Violation of children's rights, Childline receives complaint against police

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jul 9: Childline, an NGO, has received a complaint saying that certain personnel of Pandeshwar police station had behaved in a manner, which amounts to the violation of children's rights. Now, this issue is referred to the court for children's rights and an inquiry will be conducted on July 11.

Details of the issue

Four days ago when children were playing the game of cricket at Jeppu Kudappady, a dog came into the ground. The stone which the children threw at the dog in order to shoo it away accidentally fell on a nearby house. This led to some altercation. However, the children continued playing the game of cricket. In the meantime, the inmates of the house on which the stone that was thrown by the children fell, had complained about the incident to the Pandeshwar police station.

Police commissioner T R Suresh

Police personnel from Pandeshwar police station took two children to the police station. Later they called the rest of the children. All were let off after they were given a strict warning. However, later seven children complained to the Childline saying that the police personnel had violated the children's rights during the inquiry in the police station.

Renny D'Souza, director of Childline said, "As children in the age group of 10 to 11 have registered the complaint, the same is transferred to the Children Rights Welfare Committee. The inquiry will be conducted on July 11 in the court for children's rights,"

"When dealing with cases related to children, there should be a children protection officer in the police station, who is specially trained in the issues related to children. They should inquire about the case according to the children's act and in a children-friendly manner. Even the parents of children have to be called during the inquiry and counselling needs to be done in the presence of parents," added Renny.

T R Suresh, police commissioner of Mangaluru clarified that in this case, the parents of the children had escorted them to the police station.

“The officers in the police station had conducted the inquiry and warned them in the presence of the parents of the said children.,” he informed.

Very often people seem to on A FAULT FINDING MISSION and not fact finding mission. The Police have to play they roles. When a complaint is filed they cannot sleep over the issue. They are bound to take action.

It is good to see and note that the parents were with the kids and the situation was sorted out.

I have a question here. When a complaint is filed, should the Police sleep over the issue or investigate?

If the parents of those kids feel, taking a case to police is offence, then these parents must keep their children indoor and allow them to break their house articles as wished by their children. If you can't nip the errors when they are young, can you rectify the same when they are grown up? Childline must also note that Police is also a law agency to deal with any activities. Tomorrow these kids may drive a car and hit some people. What answers does childline have for such cases? Those children were not manhandled by the police. Their parents too were summoned to police while these kids were warned. The complainant has done everything according to law and the police have never crossed their limits.

What has become of Mangalore? When a stone thrown by children lands in an unintended place, people call police... And police actually arrive on the scene and take children to police station..!! We had more serious issues during my childhood but never had anyone called the police. The right thing to do would be to have a word with the children and if they don't correct themselves, then have a word with the parents. Children are not notoriously dangerous elemets of the society who must be handled by the police as if they were mature adults.
