Mangaluru: 13-year-old drowns in stone quarry at Adyar Padavu

Mangaluru, Jul 9: A 13-year-old boy got drowned in a stone quarry near his residence at Adyar Padavu here on Sunday July 8.

The incident occurred on Sunday at around 5 pm when Tameem (13) went to swim along with his friends. He lost control when he reached the middle of the stone quarry. His friends tried to save him but he got drowned in the water.

Though fire and rescue team arrived at the spot, they could not find his body. However, his body was recovered on Monday by the locals.

The locals protested following the incident. As per them, many illegal stone quarries were functioning in the region but the officials did not take any action. They alleged that the officials failed to arrest the owners of these quarries or ban the quarries.

It is learnt that in every rain season these quarries become death traps.

    My condolence to the parents and the loved one of the deceased.

    I request the District Administration to have positive approach resolving the repeat of this accident in the abandoned stone quarry.

    These stone quarry can excellent water resources if properly managed during the summers. If properly fenced with clear markings, it can be used for small irrigation or fish breeding. It can also be turned to swimming pool to teach the swimming skills to avoid future accident. If can also be used as reservoir for fire fighting or potable drinking water. This can also increase the water table in the surrounding areas.

    Around the world in schools swimming is one of the compulsory physical exercise. Only in India we have give more emphasis on 'Yoga' rather than 'Swimming, 'First aid', 'emergency response' and so on.

    What is the point of forced 'Yoga' in schools when 13 year boy can't save himself? Do Rashtriya Swayamsevak sangh and BJP has an answer for this innocent life?

    Make learning swimming compulsory for kids in school. Also teach them how to do CPR.
    This will help them much more than history lessons.

    It has been ordered by Udupi DC some time back to cover all quarry's with boundary walls otherwise strict action would be taken.
    It should follow every where.
    Quarry owners make good money by cheating all but they are putting innocent children life at risk.
    Hope new CM will take a action.
    Where is our MP and followers ? who give world class big speeches?

    I suggest administration must dump all garages in the empty quarry place and develop those places. This method must follow in all quarry places. Just like Bombay reclamation place.

    Haneef, you are right. How come parents allowed their children to swim in these death traps during these deadly monsoons? Or Children are not under parents control as you said.

    How many of us always did only what our parents told us to do?
    Surely we did what we wanted to sometimes even if it was unsafe. Sometimes children do things without the knowledge of or against the wishes of their parents. The parents will suffere their own misery now that this has happened. Do not blame the parents.

    Very few people can keeptheir kids under a sort of house arrest which is also not healthy for the kids overall personality development.Kids along with their friends do explore places of interest and venture into many such things. Most of us did that when we were kids and even during our youth. But teaching our kids some basic training in life saving skills and guiding them about potential dangerous situations is the parents duty..Otherwise our kids will only grow within the four walls ...
