Mandya, Jul 15: Residents of 40 huts living in the village of Kikkeri, under K R Pet taluk near here saw light in the night for the first time in their lives. The area is called as the slum of Kikkeri.
Well-known actress Alia Bhatt is doing this kind of social service without any propaganda. Under the campaign 'Mi Wardrobe is Su Wardrobe', which has started this year, Alia Bhatt is putting the dresses she wears for special occasions, including the ones that she wears during the shooting on auction and donates the money earned from it for social causes.
Alia got together with a Bengaluru based organization called AROHA, which donates solar lamps to economically backward people of the society from the money it gets from the recycling of plastic bottles, and provided solar lamps to the residents of 40 huts in Kikkeri.
The residents of Kikkeri were running from pillar to post in order to get electricity to their homes. However, their repeated efforts did not yield any response from the administration. When passing by this area members of AROHA organization saw the residents of this village under darkness in the evening without any source of light. So they provided the light with the help of Alia Bhatt.
The orphan residents of this place, whose huts were gutted in a fire that occurred 10-years-ago still do not have their own shelter. Except for the BPL card, the government has not given these people any other benefits. They were spending their evenings and nights under the light of kerosene lamps.
Alia expresses happiness through a tweet
"Our campaign has provided light to 40 families in Kikkeri. Numerous citizens of our country are still living under the darkness. Our aim is to provide light to these people with an environment-friendly method. AROHA, the Bengaluru-based organization is working honestly. I will do more social service by joining my hands with other organizations also," tweeted an elated Alia Bhatt.
