Mumbai, Oct 11: The high court (HC) recently issued an order appointing Jagdish K Amin, the new corporator of ward number 76 of Brahanmumbai Mahanagara Palika.
The HC nullified the election of Subhashkant Sawant, the Shiv Sena corporator who had contested municipal polls in the ward in Chakala, Andheri (east), with the help of a fake caste certificate. Also, nine criminal cases are registered against Sawant, which also helped the HC reach its verdict. A two-member bench consisting of Justice Bilal Nazki, and Jagmohan Singh Bhatia, announced this verdict on Wednesday October 7.
Amin, hailing from Karkala, in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, was a youth Shiv Sena activist mentored by former chief minister Narayan Rane. Both of them later shifted loyalties to the National Congress Party (NCP).
Accordingly, Amin contested the civic polls from J B Nagar–Sahar Road–Chakala in February 2007 on an OBC quota against Sawant. Sawant had claimed to be from Vaishyavani caste. Amin filed a case in the lower court against Sawant in May 2007.
