Kasargod, Aug 7: In connection with the murder of Abubakar Siddique (22), a CPI (M) activist from Uppala Sonkal, the special investigation team has arrested two activists of the Sangh Parivar. The knife used for the murder was found from inside the bushes located a little distance from the spot of murder.

The arrested men have been identified as Ashwith alias Achchu (28) from Pratap Nagar, Sonkal, and Karthik (27) residing near Aila Maidan. Two others have been absconding. The police said that tussle which culminated in murder initially arose after consumption of liquor in public was questioned. They said Karthik happens to be the main accused in the case. They are also looking at this crime from the angle of political rivalry as both of the accused are Hindu activists.

Both the accused were taken into custody from Sonkal area. Two motor bikes abandoned at the spot of crime were confiscated by the police. The investigation team led the arrested persons to the spot of crime. They would be presented in the court on Tuesday August 7.

A special investigation team headed by the town deputy superintendent of police, V Sukumaran, has been formed to investigate the case. The team has 20 members including two circle inspectors.

After the mortal remains of the youth were subjected to post-mortem examination at Pariyaram Medical College Hospital. The body was kept at five different places to enable people to pay their last respects. It reached the residence on Monday evening, after which the funeral was conducted as the mosque at Sonkal.

After the murder happened, the entire town wore a deserted look, reminding the people of an environment of Hartal. On account of unannounced bandh, shops and establishments at Uppala, Kumble, etc remained closed. Buses did not move and stones were pelted at two buses near Bandyodu, including a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus.

The police have undertaken precautions and no untoward incident has been reported so far. The police are keeping close vigil in sensitive areas.
