Out of these, around 295 major projects including bridges and roads were likely to get completed by March next year, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Mansukh Mandaviya said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

"To resolve the problem of traffic jams in the country the government has undertaken the work of constructing new underpasses, over-bridges and widening of roads.

"Around 1,837 projects amounting to Rs 6.45 lakh crore having length of 61,164 km are ongoing for the development and resolving the problem of traffic jams on national highways in the whole country," an official statement said.

It added that provisions of over bridges and underpasses, along with widening of roads, have been made an integral part of the highway development project for the safety of road users.

1800 Projects to solve the current traffic problems all over India, including Mangalore, is an encouraging situation. We have to wait and see patiently for the progress to appear sooner or later, sooner the better. People have been very patient, as always, and this is the best indication that the Government can appreciate because no where in this world people are so tolerant and patient than India.

People of India are well educated. They appreciate the situations very well on each and every occasion.

Let the fruits of patience and tolerance bring the desired results on the roads of India. That is the best gift the people can get from the Government.

We plead with the Government to undertake projects aimed at solving the problems faced by commuters on Mangalore's roads - what with non-functioning traffic signals; buses and lorries travelling at a lethal speed; pedestrian (zebra) crossings that are not respected; and free-for-alls at crossroads, like the one at Jyothi, where drivers take the law into their own hands when policemen are not on duty.

It's a jungle out there with the survival of the largest and the fleetest!!
