Panaji, Oct 14: Fiona Mackeown, mother of British teenager Scarlett Eden Keeling, has launched a fresh attempt to procure organs of her daughter which were removed during the two autopsies conducted in India.
The British mother, who is currently facing charges of neglect, had found that uterus, kidneys and stomach contents of Scarlett were missing. The missing organs were noticed during the third autopsy, which is currently underway in UK.
Scarlett's bruised semi-nude corpse was found at Anjuna beach on February 18 following which two locals were arrested and charged for drugging, raping and leaving her to die on the beach.
"During the investigations, two autopsies were conducted by team of doctors at Goa medical college and hospital. The organs were removed for examination during these autopsies, authorities confirmed.
Goa authorities had earlier refused to hand over the organs. Now since the case is being handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), we hope that at least the federal agency would hand over the same to the mother so that she can have decent burial to her daughter," Fiona's counsel Vikram Varma said.
Varma has written letter to CBI on behalf of Fiona stating that in absence of organs, the third autopsy is left incomplete in UK.
"I understand that the said organs are now under the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation," Varma said.
"In case the forensic tests have been completed, it is prayed that the organs are handed over to the coroner's office in Davon, UK for completion of their autopsy procedures," the lawyer stated.
Fiona has flatly refused to cremate Scarlett's body sans the vital organs. "The body of the deceased has not been cremated as yet because of these organs missing from her body," Varma said.
The letter has asked the modalities which are required for the transfer of the remaining organs.
