Bicholim, Jul 18: In a case highlighting growing concerns over underage driving, Bicholim police have registered an FIR against the father of a 16-year-old girl who was involved in a road accident at Sanquelim, injuring a 70-year-old motorcyclist.

According to police sources, the incident took place while the minor was riding a two-wheeler from Vasant Nagar to Gokulwadi in a rash and negligent manner. While attempting to overtake, the teen collided with Ramakant Chari, a senior resident of Parye, Sattari, causing serious injuries to his right leg.

Chari was immediately rushed to Sanquelim Community Health Centre and later shifted to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, for advanced treatment. He has since been discharged, police confirmed.

What has raised further alarm is that the minor rider fled the scene without offering help or informing the authorities about the accident. Police said this act of negligence prompted them to register an offence against her father, who allowed her to ride the vehicle without a valid licence.

The case has been filed under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Head Constable Ladu Gawas is leading the investigation under the supervision of Bicholim PI Vijay Rane Sardesai.

Police have reiterated that parents and guardians will be held accountable in such cases and urged citizens not to allow minors to operate motor vehicles under any circumstances.
