Udupi, Oct 15:
Although the paddy harvest in the district is on in full swing, the farmers are distressed at the unexpected rainfall over the past few days. Showers in the ‘kharif’ season dampen the spirits of farmers as they cannot leave their harvested crop in the fields overnight. A shortage of farm hands is also a nagging worry this season.

The farmer fraternity has no one to lend them a sympathetic ear despite thousands of families being solely dependent on paddy cultivation for their livelihood. Even neighbours are not as helpful as they used to be.

The farm hands that would accept grains in lieu of wages, have now begun demanding money. Rivalry between local farm hands and migrant labourers from neighbouring districts has worsened the situation.

The unexpected showers have forced the farmers to segregate the paddy and hay in the same field. The farmers in the coastal belt have always been at a disadvantage through successive governments, in comparison with their counterparts in Uttara Kannada region. Whether chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, who had taken his oath in the name of the farming fraternity, will be able to solve their problems, is a million dollar question.

On average the summer monsoon ends 30 September according to our Met Dept. In recent years one often finds the tail of the monsoon wagging, sometimes overlapping with the start of the northeast monsoon. So, it is not unexpected as such, although rainfall prediction becomes more difficult compared with that during the peak monsoon period, characterised by widespread rainfall.

Not having/using tractor in coastal paddy fields is not the problem. The problem is farmers fields are small(Tiller is OK) and generally each ones total holding is less than 5 Acres which is not economical for survival of farmers. Nobody can help in this respect. Not even the Governemnts of the past nor the Govts. yet to come.

Our farmers continue to do the harvesting manually. We see the clippings of Northern states where machines are used to cut the crop, separate the grain, etc., a faster, less laborious process. Sadly, all we got in our place so far is just a tiller which too requires a man to run - a tractor is a distant dream. With younger members of the family leaving the village for studies/job, the older members let the fields fallow.

Moreover, recent Chickengunya outbreak made a farmer's life even miserable. Our Govt. is all set to transform our agricultural land into SEZ than providing our farmers with modern machinery and encourage more yield.

Our politicians, once got elected, forget about developing the area they got elected from and dedicate themselves to please the higher authorities. I do sympathize with our poor farmers.
