Mangalore, Aug 12: Konkani Cultural Organization (KCO) Trust, in association with Samanvaya, Mangaluru, disbursed scholarships to needy students in a ceremony held at centenary memorial hall, Jeppu here on Sunday, August 12.
As many as 57 students received scholarship worth Rs 9 lac.
Addressing the gathering, president of KCO Michael D’Silva said, “This scholarship is given to you by generous minded people and you need to make best use of it. Help your family by working hard. People are suffering from various diseases especially due to unhygienic and lack of cleanliness. Cleanliness need to be maintained and children need to keep their surrounding clean to be healthy. Our city is 99% clean when compared to other places and the work of municipality must be appreciated.”
"Several places in state are hit by drought. Hence we should not waste water and be a responsible citizen,” he added.
Former president of KCO, Robert Rego, said, “I congratulate KCO for disbursing scholarship to the students. KCO has grown since the last 23 years and I am proud to be a part of it. Today Rs 9 lac has been given to 57 students, which is commendable. Cleanliness is our duty. Cleanliness of our mind, heart and environment is important,”
KCO came into existence in 1995 as a small organization. From 2004 onwards, it started disbursing financial assistance to students and NGOs with the objective of helping the needy. So far, 1000 students have availed benefits from it. The trust coordinates with Samanvaya in Mangaluru to identify the students and NGOs who need financial assistance.
KCO president Michael D’Silva welcomed the gathering, KCO general secretary Leena D’Souza rendered vote of thanks, and director of Samanvaya Fr Ronald Cutinho compered the programme.
Assistant secretary Sandhya Vas, entertainment secretary Benet D’Mello, members Lizel Pinto, Placy Fernandes, former president Jerry D’Mello, ex-treasurer Franklin D Cunha, PRO Jaison Correa and others were present.
