Kundapur: Snails give sleepless nights to paddy farmers

Kundapur, Aug 12: Snails invading agriculture lands are posing a serious problem for farmers in several places in Shankaranarayana as they repeatedly destroy paddy seeds sown by them.

Though a unique variety of snails are often seen in paddy fields during monsoons every year, a large number of the species is seen in Shankaranarayana, Yadamakki and other places this year. These snails destroy the sprouts of paddy seeds.

Farmers in Yadamakki and Shankaranarayana use drum seeder to sow pre-germinated seeds. The seeds did not grow into plants even after a week though the weather and water were conducive and quality seeds were used. Raghavendra Devadiga, a farmer, who got down to the fields, to find the reason, saw innumerable number of snails in the fields. When he picked one of them, he noticed a paddy seed on its tongue. The fast spreading snail menace has been posing a serious threat to crops in region now.

Raghavendra Upadhyaya, Subbu Bhat Yadamakki, Ganapa Kulal and others sowed seeds thrice and incurred losses.
Farmers are facing scarcity of labour, exorbitant wages and high manure prices. While it is difficult to cultivate once, sowing seeds thrice is bound to cause loss. However, they have done it with the determination of not leaving their fields barren.

Officials visit the place

When the matter was brought to the notice of concerned officials, Rajendra Shettigar and a team from the department of agriculture visited the fields of Raghavendra Upadhyaya and conducted inspection. Rajendra Shettigar saw a large number of snails in the field. He said that he will hold discussions with agricultural department scientists.

Vittal Rao, assistant director of agriculture said that they have contacted experts in Dharwad regarding snails. “The snails live by eating 227 types of plants. They are active from 5 pm till the next day’s morning. They hide under mud during the day. They can live for many days without food. If Metaldehyde (pesticide against snails) is mixed with decayed vegetable and kept in a corner of fields, they get attracted towards the vegetable, eat them and die. They can be prevented from going to other fields by drawing lines with malathion powder,” he said.

I remember my grandmother making a delicious curry of snails with Dal and Spinach ( Valchebaji/ Basale). They are in great demand worldwide, you see them now and then in supermarkets across the Middle East, imported by air from France and are very expensive. Probably the snails of today found in our areas are not edible due to use of pesticides.

Those whose houses are nearby their paddy fields can get rid of the problem by rearing ducks which relish on snails & insects.

Ducks can swallow fish but these snails have a very hard shell in the shape of a pot sometimes going beyond 1" dia. I am sure ducks won't swallow it along with its shell and also I don't think ducks are the species that break shells (i.e. a parrot)

@Jenifer mangalore, here too we have snail problems in fields, but they are so called naked snails they dont have shells. .and we do let "indian ducks "which are specialized to swallow the snails.but one has to keep water nearby ,so they wash snails first before swallow.what I see in picture are I am sure berg snails which usually from grapes growing places exists.we do have such here,Thier shell is soft.Best is keep some salat leaves on the rand of fields and they collect there.pour some hot water or boiling water on them and die.First try ducks. These ducks are very fond of snails.but a pot of clean water is necessary.but they dont eat more than 2-3once ,later eat .

Ducks "might be helpful" during the initial growth stage of snails, if handled properly. Otherwise snails might be too big to handle for the ducks as well.

when we were small we used to catch these species in konkani we call it KONGE and our mother used to make a delicious curry out of it, but after few years we used to search for that in fields near kudupu, but we couldnt find any. after we came to the conclusion that this species completely distroyed by using chemicals and pest controls. so sad!!!
there is also necessity of this species in the soil. without necessity god is not creating any creature.

These snails (Narthe as called in Tulu) were a delicacy some 25-30 years back in rainy season but gradually they disappeared. It was suspected that due to the use of fertilizers they may have vanished. However, there was no news about harm caused by them then.

Well, the days that the farmers lost can't be brought back. Perhaps they should directly plant saplings, instead of waiting for the paddy to sprout, on the prepared soil. I am sure the snails will not harm the grow paddy plants.

Narthe... some people make curry of narthe.

There is a very easy way to get the snails killed. They are very sensitive to ambient PH. Just sprinkle very little hydroxides like calcium( caustic soda) or potassium. (causic potash). this might kill all snails.
