Not a single economist in the world praised demonetisation: P Chidambaram

New Delhi, Aug 29(DC): Criticising the Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP for the demonetisation drive in 2016, former finance minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday said that the move was not praised by a single economist across the world.

While addressing a National Students' Union of India (NSUI) event in Delhi, Chidambaram said, "Show me one economist anywhere in the world who stood up and said demonetisation was a good thing. Not one. On the day PM announced demonetisation, Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian was in Kerala. He was not in Delhi. He was not event consulted. He didn't know that demonetisation is taking place. If CEA doesn't know, what kind of an economy is this?"

On November 8, 2016, the Modi government had invalidated the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes, claiming it was a crackdown on the shadow economy and use of illicit and counterfeit cash to fund illegal activities and terrorism. The move was criticised by several Opposition parties.

Earlier this month, a recent study by the Reserve Bank of India or RBI noted that the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have been adversely hit by the Goods and Services Tax roll-out and demonetisation, which had a significant impact on the overall credit of the sector.

Besides demonetisation, Chidambaram also raised questions over the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

"Ayushman Bharat is an insurance based model. Government says it will pay the premium...Is that the right model for India? I don't think so. The right model for India is the one practiced in Europe - vast expansion of public facilities, more public hospitals, more super specialities, more tertiary hospitals, more district-level hospitals, more primary health centres, more doctors and nurses, more beds and free public health care. That's the way you can treat our 130 crore people. You can't go by an insurance model," Chidambaram claimed.

He added, "Insurance model has been a complete failure anywhere in the world. Even in America, Obama Care - an insurance model, has been seriously questioned. America's per capital is 150,000 dollars and India’s per capital is barely 1,800 dollars. But, who will tell the government that this is a wrong model?"

Meanwhile, Chidambaram asserted that the under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Indian economy was "more competent".

"I've seen how President Barack Obama used to sit with Manmohan Singh and listen to him. Not that Obama will accept everything Dr Manmohan Singh says, but he wanted to listen to him to know how to run a huge economy," Chidambaram said.

Ideally Chiddu should have said 'Not a single economist from CONGRESS praised'. The rest of the INdia and world appreciated it. The subsequent state elections reflected the mood of the nation, as Cong was ousted from more states. Its no use singing MMS praises, he was just a caretaker of the so called 'Gandhis'. India has shown them their right place.

    Agree to your logic.
In the same concept/principles, would you accept Rahul Gandhi to be our future PM ?
Secondly can you explain, why Oil prices ascending when Intl. cost on oil is much lower when it was 5 years ago. Why Rupee value is falling other major world currencies. Why domestic price index is not in favour of a common man.
Questions are many but answr is only Modi can sole them. Elect the party for next term.

.Those who had listened to Amit Mitra’s (Indian economist and politician) comments on NDTV yesterday, as to ill facts facts & figures on demonetization & GST, killer oil price and dwindling Rupee value, unemployment and curtailed industrial growth and expanding non-performing bad loans etc. . would have realized how India's economy is destroyed by the genius PM and his team members. There was a debate too and most of the panel members agreed to the misery which has befallen upon Indian economy.
Must know that ruling India is not as simple as running Gujarat State.

Does Chidambaram think that IMF does not have any economists on board?

IMF is just a glorified bank. It's economic-advisory role should be seen from the angle of its lending.

When India (like other countries) borrows in billions from the IMF, IMF wants certainty that India is in a position to pay back the money. So, IMF is not concerned to the issues faced by people.

So, if India tells IMF that India is demonetising to self-certify that India is a reliable/trustworthy borrower, IMF will certainly praise the move! What is IMF's loss by praising India?

But IMF's reports do not mean that Indian leaders understand what they are doing.

Before Modi implemented demonetization in India, countries like Ghana, Nigeria, North Korea, Zimbabwe, Pakistan etc had demonetized their currenncy and the results were disastrous which means either Modi didn't know this or he's not the kind who would learn from other's mistakes, for it cost the nation 3% of GDP amounting to 2 lack crores permanent loss. It's said Swaminathan Gurumurthy of Swaminomics fame was the advisor to Modi on demonetization, who's the editor of Tuglak, Tamil weekly and demonetization was nothing short of legendary Tuglak strategy!
