Udupi: Hejamady inner road toll, local vehicles exempted temporarily

Daijworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Sep 3: Local vehicles are exempted from paying the toll in the toll gate that is put up on the inner road at Hejamady. Local drivers got furious and held protest when the toll collection was started on the inner road, which falls under the PWD (old MBC road), on the morning of Sunday, September 2.

Later the decision of not collecting toll on the inner road was arrived at a meeting that was held at the Hejamady police outpost in which representatives of Navyug Company, Kaup tahsildar, police officials and members of National Highway Agitation Committee took part.

Hiring charges Rs 200, toll 110!

Light goods tempos transporting materials in the short distance of two km between Mulky and Hejamady take Rs 200 as hiring charges from their customers. In this they are made to pay Rs 110 as toll. The drivers and owners of these tempos are questioning as to how they can survive with this kind of toll collection.

Decisions taken in the meeting

Navyug Company has to complete all the works including the signal lights and make way for the smooth flow of traffic. Relaxation from paying the toll should be given to local light vehicles, service buses and commercial vehicles with yellow number plates that fall under the Hejamady limits.

Shekhar Hejmady, convener of national highway agitation committee, Dr Deviprasad Shetty, president of the committee, Gulam Mohammed, vice-president of the committee, union of tempo drivers, Sunil Alva, president, Mulky town municipality, Vishalakshi Putran, president, Hejamady gram panchayat, Panduranga Karkera, Sudhir Karkera, Govardhan Kotian, H Ravi Kunder, Ravindra Hejmady, Vasant Hejamady, Chandrashekar Mulky, Mohan Shetty Mulky, Kaup tahsildar Gurusiddaiah Hiremat, revenue inspector Ravishankar, Kaup circle inspector Halamurthy Rao, Padubidri police sub-inspector Satish and Ravibabu of Navyug toll plaza were present in the meeting.

Navyug Company did not keep its promise

Dr Deviprasad Shetty, president of national highway agitation committee said, "Navyug Company has not fulfilled any promises made to the public. Service road is not built for the vehicles to enter from the northern part to the village of Hejamady. Skywalk is not built for locals to cross the road near the highway. The water supply pipes that were broken during the work, have not been set right. Due to this the road of PWD is completely damaged. This has to be repaired. We will not tolerate collection of toll without completing all these pending works."

In this regard, many discussions have been held between the responsible people, organizations, public and NHAI officials in presence of our elected MLAs, MPs and protests were organized many times but end result is big ZERO. It was all dramas, eye –wash just to please and pacify the public. When all the people mentioned above are involved and hands in gloves with each other in this conspiracy it will go on without any expected result. It is indeed a problem and burden for common and middle class people and small scale business people and traders.
Although it is against the norms and law to build toll gate between a short distance of 8KM like in Suratkal and Hejamadi, Navyug Company has installed the toll gates at their arbitrary discretion in both the places even without providing any basic facilities such as service road and other related facilities.
Apart from that now they have build one more toll gate in the inner road, very close(not even a kilometer) to the main toll gate at Hejamadi and started collecting toll effective from 02.09.2018,Sunday except from local vehicles. Do you think it is a wise decision, when there is already existing one main toll gate not even within the distance of one kilometer? Is it not the violation of NHAI norms and law ?.Now nobody will talk about this, even elected representative, MLAs, MPs and concerned authorities keeping their mouth shut because they have already got their share. This type of looting by Navyug company will not last long and Almighty God is watching and day will come to act like what happened in Kerala,Coorg and some parts of coastal Karnataka.Don’t be so greed for money.Money is not everything but required to meet our basic needs.
Now what we need from the concerned authorities, Navyug Company and NHAI officials is exempt all vehicles registered in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi from paying toll. Now this is the time for concerned authorities, elected representatives,MLAs and MPs to interfere and involve themselves to set the matter in order.Negotiate with concerned departments and solve the problems faced by the public once for all. Before collecting the toll, let them provide all the basic facilities. Now it is like a goondaism.

Within 8 Km tollgate is (Surathkal to Hejmady) unlawful. last time the committee wanted to file a case but during the hearing the lawyer representing the case was blackmailed by the thugs and he did not submit the papers. And each one of the politicians are given hafta every month by the contractor who collects the toll.
