Most people tend to shy away from the subject of cancer. That’s natural as often the thought process is if I talk about it, it may happen to me or this affects other people, not me. The reluctance to be aware or take the right steps to safeguard health often has tragic consequences. Specifically for breast cancer, the number of casualties is growing. It is known to be the world’s leading cause of cancer-related deaths for women aged 15 – 64. Men too are prone to this disease, but the percentage is much lower than women – currently it’s 1% of all breast caner related cases. Breast cancer can be devastating not just for the woman, but for the entire family. It’s important to be fully aware of the implications of this deadly disease.

What is breast cancer?

Very simply, when cells in the breast tissue divide and grow out of control they form a lump or mass called a tumour. Not all tumours are cancerous, but a cancerous tumour in the breast is called breast cancer. Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women.

What causes breast cancer?

The causes of this disease are still not fully known, but medical research has identified a number of risk factors that can increase a woman’s chances of getting breast cancer. Knowing these risks is important. It can help you better understand your chances of developing breast cancer and also the steps that you need to take to protect yourself from it. However, what you must remember is that whilst some women have many risks, they may never get breast cancer whilst others with lesser risk may be diagnosed with the disease. Unfortunately the tow most well established risk factors are being a woman and getting older.

Top risk factors for breast cancer

  • Being a woman
  • Getting older
  • Family or previous history of breast cancer
  • Being overweight
  • Not breast feeding
  • No children or first child after 35
  • Use of birth control pills
  • Consuming more than one drink of alcohol per day
  • Having your period before the age of 12
  • Dense breast or high bone density

Reduce your risks make important lifestyle choices

Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, limit alcohol and lastly remain aware about changes in you body.

Know what is normal for you

See a doctor immediately if you notice any of these changes:

Lump, hard knot or thickening (breast of underarm)
 Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
Change in size of shape of breast
 Dimpling or puckering
Itch or rash especially in nipple area
Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
Nipple discharge that is spontaneous and bloody
A sore on the breast that does not heal

Three steps you can take to beat breast cancer

1. Annual mammography (breast X ray) from the age of 40 onwards
2. Clinical breast exam by your doctor every three years starting from age 20, and every year starting from age 40
3. Monthly breast self  - examination

Early Detection Saves Lives.

If detected early, breast cancer can be treated successfully. Regular checks are important for every woman.

Stay alert. Stay Well.

Rolly, Sara,Tania,Nick,Ingrid, my apologies to you and to whoever may have felt hurt from my comments. There are always two sides of a coin. All of you may have seen them from one side, since you were celebrating the achivements, and you are right in a way. I might have seen them from the eyes of others, who have won the battle but could not celebrate, and some who are still battling and could not celebrate.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the breast cancer awareness event, in particular the organisers and participants who once again bring this terrible disease to a more comprehendable level. p.s I suggest Noel carefully considers whether to attend charity events, he obviously is yet to realise that many people in this world don't rely on religion to aid their suffering but take compassion from the people that stand by there side everyday.

I'm sure that survivors of breast cancer do not want a pat on the back but "thank god" they have the strength to spread the word and allow others the chance to diagnose early and also survive!

The fashion show was a great success, awareness IS the key. Everyone who walked the catwalk on Friday are individuals committed to battling cancer head on. The survivors all looked fantastic and are an inspiration to us all. I don't like to be negative but Noel i think you missed the whole point of what the fashion show stood for......

Thank you for providing coverage of the recent Breast Cancer Survivors Fashion Show. I would also like to thank the Survivors and their Friends whom made the show a success. Whilst Noel does not seem to think surviving Breast Cancer is nothing to show off about - I would like to say he is WRONG! These women and millions of women around the world take inspiration from those survivors and their families. Not only was the parade providing awareness of the disease, it is also allowing survivors to rebuild their confidence, celebrate the fact they are survivors and thank their family and friends. I believe that a more Christian approach would have been to keep your negative, unhelpful comments to yourself. Congratulations to all the survivors - I look forward to cheering you on at your next event and continue to support such a worthy cause.

I think Noel has completely got the wrong end of the stick and should think about what his views before putting them on paper. I was hugely proud of all the women involved in the fashion show and was there to support my wife. They all showed courage to get up and show so many people that you can beat breast cancer and you can also be strong and confident again no matter the after effects of the disease and the drugs and treatment used to beat it.

It promotes awareness, buts a positive spin on a negative subject and I think is brilliant. Noel mentions that a proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior..is that not exactly what this show as doing!? I question whether Noel was also against the breast cancer walk to raise money for the Charity? Shall we all just sit back and pray and not try and beat the disease by research and awareness. Unfortunatley Noel I find your comments very shortsighted.

As one of the survivors at the Fashion Parade this year, I would like to reply to Noel's comment. We all acknowledge that it was God's intervention that helped us find out we had the disease, his strength that helped us get better and his guidance to make us strong to help others. In our own ways we have been doing our bit back to the community.

The reason for the fashion show is to make others aware that cancer does not mean looking miserable, feeling miserable and death. It means strength to fight, the will to live and conquor and finally being a model for the rest of the world that we can still go on living a normal life and still look good. In this way we are giving our witness that God has shown us the way and today we want to show you what a wonderful job he has done. We are all strong and never fear if we have to get it again and relive the experience, as it will make us stronger and closer to HIM. I speak for myself and all the women at the show. I have to mention that doing charity works of different types has been in me since a child. It does not take a dreadful disease to make one open one's eyes. I would prefer if people do not generalise as all the ladies in the show this year are known to me personally and have been working for the cause much before they have been diagnosed by supporting their friends and family, and being with them through it till death.

Maybe Noel had a bad experience with friends in his life and therefore is bitter. Remember: Insensitivity and ignorance helps no one, neither do negative comments and generalisations. We are a strong group chosen by HIM to pass on the message of faith and hope, strength and courage and help the millions of ladies who may have insensitive families.

While complimenting all those who have won the war on breast cancer and cancer in general, and wishing them well in the future, honestly I couldnt get to convince myself about the relations between 1. Surviving breast cancer 2.Fashion Parade and 3. Message. Cancer is a very strange and unpredictable disease. The day-the time-the environment and the doctor who tells you "You have cancer" is either the begining of the battle to win, if you are bold, or begining of the end if you are not.

And if you have won this battle there is nothing to show off or advertise least of all a fashion show. All one can do is thank the almighty and the those who helped you win this battle, and keep praying that the disease will not come back again And as for giving a message of awareness, to others there are lots of ways of doing so, and are beng done, though nobody takes the messages seriously till you get hit by it

Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. And all the cancer patients who have survived know the one and only answer for their survival which is not mentioned the artical. Cancer can be healed by divine intervention of God the Healer
