Mangalore, Nov 1: A total of 26 achievers from Dakshina kannada  district, drawn from different fields, were honoured with district level Kannada Rajyotsava Awards during the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations convened at the Nehru Maidan here on Saturday November 1.

As many as six government servants were honoured with the Nagarika Seva Award, while six others were  felicitated during the celebrations for saving lives during the Ulaibettu bus tragedy that occurred on August 14 this year.



Addressing the gathering after hoisting the flag and inspecting the guard of honour, district-in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar said, that Dakshina Kannada district has earned name and fame for itself in almost every field. Still, social evils such as illiteracy, population explosion, un-employment, natural calamities, communal violence and terrorism have been plaguing the district, he noted. "I appeal to every citizen of this district to join hands with the authorities to eradicate all the problems being confronted by our own people. People should live with peace and harmony to realise the dream of a developed Karnataka", he urged.

The achievers who received awards were: Umapathi Shastri, Dharmasthala (literature and research); G S  Ubaradkka, Sullia (literature); S  Mohandas Nayak, Mangalore (medical service, education, social service); Vasanthi Kadire, Mangalore (women's literacy); Devu Poojary, Puttur (traditional kambala); Srinivasa Rao, Mangalore (children's literature); Kudmar S Venkataraman, Puttur (classical music).

Machendranath Pandeshwar, Mangalore (theatre); Shashikala, Kasaragod (classical dance - teacher); Bhojarajan, Moodbidri (Nagaswara recital); S Srinivasa Prabhu, Mangalore (Konkani literature); Peruvodi Narayana Bhat, Puttur (Yakshagana); Harekala Balakrishna Achar, Mangalore (wood carving); Keshava P Shettigar, Suratkal (traditional "talimu"); David, Bantwal (painting); N.S. Gokhale, Belthangady (cooperative sector); Sudhakar Rao Pejawar, Mangalore (cultural organisation).

P. Kedeeshwaran, Kukke Subrahmanya (traditional instrumental music); A. Shivananda Karkera, Mangalore (Tulu drama); B. Vittal Rao, Kukke Subrahmanya (rural journalism); Jagannatha Shetty Bala, Suratkal (journalism); B Srikanth Rao, Mangalore (electronic media); Abdul Rahim, B C Road (Beary literature), Bhaskar Bangera, Mangalore (Bhootaradhane); Gopalakrishna Delampady (Yoga); and Poovamma, Mangalore (sports).

The government servants who received Nagarika Seva Prashasti are: Dayavathi, education officer, Aksaradasoha Education Department, Dr Surendranath Nayak, medical officer, community helath centre, Bantwal, K Narayana Shetty, agriculture officer, assistant agriculture director's office, KS Chandrashekar, assistant engineer, zilla panchayat sub-division, P H Prakash Shetty, secretary, Madantyar grama panchayat, and Bhaskar K, driver, backward classes and minority department.

Six others who were honoured for saving several lives during the Ulaibettu bus tragedy were: Siddiq Malemane, Sampa Permanki, Sahul Hamid Kempugudde, Rafique Maanjugudde, Asif Maanjugudde and Muhammed Ashraf Permanki.



An impressive march past by different wings of the district police, home guards, NCC, army and air force units, Seva Dal boys and girls, NSS etc/. was the highlight of the official celebrations of the Rajyotsava. Earlier, a procession was taken out  from Bunts Hostel Circle in the city  to Nehru Maidan, which featured various tableaus.

District deputy commissioner M Maheshwara Rao, K P Sucharita Shetty, president, zilla panchayat, MLA UT Khader and B Nagaraj Shetty, chairman of the Coastal Development Authority were present on the occasion.
