Bantwal, Oct 24: Five students who had gone to enjoy a swim in Netravati river water on Wednesday, October 24 were caught unawares by the sudden force of water released from AMR dam in Navoora gram panchayat limits.

As schools were closed due to Valmiki Jayanti, a group of eleven students from outside the taluk had been to the river to swim near Vishnumoorthi temple, in Navooru gram panchayat limits. Meanwhile, water from nearby Shambhoor AMR dam was released all of a sudden. Six students in the group who saw the rush and increasing level of water in the river, swam and reached the shore. But the remaining five students who could not swim, climbed on to a huge rock in the river.

The students, who reached the shore, screamed and raised alarm for help. Meanwhile, a group of locals, jumped into the river and rescued the stranded students with the help of a rope.

Bantwal rural station SI Prasanna and staff visited the spot and conducted investigation. It is said that the students were from outside the taluk and had come to SVS College for a sports tournament. Officials from Shambhoor AMR dam have clarified that they had blown the siren as a precaution before releasing water.

Madam Rita, read my comment here given below. Do not try to change people who do not want to get changed. They have grown up and not small kids. Leave them alone. Jai Hind.

Even if the officials had blown the siren, it wouldn't be of much help. Most people don't even know the symbolism
of the siren while others including me came to know about that only today after reading this news.
There should be proper signs along the shore that should alert all people when water is being released from the dam.

When the water in the dam reaches and croses the Safety Level the authorities have warned and released water. Safety of the DAM was important.
Leave alone God, even they would not have listened to the Devil coming there with the Siren and warning. Jai Hind

Sirens can be blown for different reasons.. How visitors from outside taluk can come to know that siren was for releasing the water?? Even I came to know today... There should be personnel deputed near the river side before releasing the water or loud speakers to announce the same or some boards..
Thank god students are saved and also their parents must have felt a sign of relief.. God bless these students.
