Gurugram, Oct 31 (Agencies) : City police on Sunday arrested a senior executive of a private firm in connection with the mysterious death of his wife. Deepika Chauhan, aged 32, died after falling off the balcony of her eighth-floor apartment in Ansal Valley View Society on the Gurugram-Faridabad Road on Saturday night.

Preliminary statements suggested that the deceased fell from the balcony of her apartment, however, police decided to pursue other angles in the wake of a complaint by Deepika's father, Harikishan Ahuja who claimed that her death was caused by her husband. Following an investigation into the matter, police on Sunday arrested the husband, Vikram Chauhan for his alleged involvement in his wife's death.

The deceased's father told police that the couple got married out of love in 2013 and had a four-year-old daughter and six-month-old son. However, Vikram got romantically involved with a woman from his apartment building causing discord between the couple.

In his statement to the police, the deceased's father said that his daughter observed a 'karwa chauth' fast on Saturday. When Deepika confronted Vikram over the frequent visits of his mistress to the couple's apartment, he pushed her off the balcony, said Harikishan Ahuja. Following his arrest on Sunday, Deepak was produced before a court and remanded to two days in police custody.

A similar incident was reported from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh where a woman bludgeoned her husband to death on the day Karwa Chauth was observed, reportedly to avenge her daughter’s murder. Police officials familiar with the matter said that the woman’s husband strangled their minor daughter to death over a minor tiff.
