Kochi: Two Kerala Priests held for Sr Abhaya's Murder

Kochi, Nov 19: Two Catholic priests have been arrested for the 1992 murder of a nun, Sister Abhaya, whose body was found in the well of a convent in  Kerala's Kottayam town, police said on Wednesday.

The 13th Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team began its probe into the 16-year-old murder after 12 previous probes failed to crack the case.

After a 16-year-long trial, finally Fr Thomas Kottoor , Fr Jose Puthrukayil were arrested by CBI. Another reports say a nun, Sr Stefy has also been arrested. These arrests are considered as the begining of end of the 16 year old case.

The Kerala High Court had last month rapped the investigating agency over the slow progress in its probe and asked the Kerala unit of the CBI to take over.

Abhaya, an inmate of Pious X hostel near here, was found dead in the well of the convent March 27, 1992. The CBI concluded in November 1996 that the death was a homicide but the murderer remained untraced.

Public interest in the case was re-ignited in April last year after a newspaper reported that Abhaya's medical reports were tampered with at a chemical laboratory in state capital Thiruvananthapuram.

Let us not sit in judgement over this case. This is the 13th probe in the matter which may prove unlucky to the arrested ones if at all they are involved in the murder.

It is unfair that any one should come to any conclusion at this stage. Let the law take its course and until then the two priests remain accused but not condemned. May the soul of poor nun REST IN PEACE Joe Gonsalves

Even if accused are freed by our courts, there is another final court. If they are guilty they will punished. There is NO plantiff, NO defendent, NO material evidence. ONLY  FINAL JUDGEMENT. That is Almighty Gods court. May Sisters soul rest in peace.

If at all there is truth in it, since past 16 years concerned priests should have stopped taking confessions and along with the arrested nun they should have gone for an early confession to seek absolution from God and closure of the case uprightly. Instead, they tangled the truth until it is forcibly to be revealed, scandalizing the whole society since 1992 and yet how many hypocritical years are ahead either to twist it or to confess it ? . What to learn from this episode, are sins are difficult to confess for the clergy?.
