New Delhi, Nov 17(India Today): Following the steps of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has also decided to withdraw the general consent given to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The decision effectively means that the CBI cannot continue or initiate a fresh probe in the state without seeking express consent from the state government.
Addressing party workers at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) core committee meeting in Kolkata, Banerjee said, "Chandrababu Naidu has rightly barred the entry of CBI in his state. There are provisions for it. We have read the Constitution as well."
In 1989, the then Left government in West Bengal had had issued a general consent to the central agency for its operations in West Bengal.
On Friday, the Mamata Banerjee government said, "Previously there was no such need (to withdraw general consent). But times have changed because instructions are being sent to CBI from the BJP's party office."
"From CBI to RBI (Reserve bank of India), it's a disaster across all institutions," Banerjee said. Last month, the Trinamool Congress chief said CBI actually is the "BJP Bureau of Investigation".
"CBI has now become so-called BBI (BJP Bureau of Investigation)--very unfortunate," Banerjee had tweeted. Several TMC leaders are under the scanner of the central probe agency in connection to the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam in West Bengal.
Renewing her attack against the Modi government, Banerjee said, "Sometimes I think they are history changers, name changers, note changers but not game changers. Hence, the country is in danger!"
Accusing the BJP and the RSS of "attempting to erase" the legacy of their opponents, Banerjee said they are trying to change entire history.
"They want to erase everyone except the BJP. Seems as if they are the ones who gave birth to this nation, though they had no role in our independence! I want to ask them, who killed Gandhi Ji? Let me not say any more," she said.
