Mangalore, Dec 13:
All India Home Guards Day was celebrated by the district home guards at the police parade ground here on Saturday December 13.

Speaking after receiving the guard of honour from the four battalions of home guards led by senior schedule commandant V Subraya Pai, Krishna J Palemar, district-in-charge minister said, “Home guards have been working as an auxiliary force to the police department. The government cannot provide the same kind of facilities to them that have been provided to the police personnel.”

He said the government is anticipating round-the-clock honest service to the district from the force. IGP A M Prasad, guest of honour, said that more importance will be given to coastal security in the backdrop of the Mumbai terror attacks.

“We have sent a proposal to the government to deploy the home guard force on a permanent basis to tackle naxalites and strengthen coastal security. Coastal security will be provided with shipping vessels by March 2009”, added Prasad.

SP Sathish Kumar and Nidarsh Hegde, district home guards superintendent, were present on the occasion.
