Udupi: ICYM Kolalgiri and Karval Milan Dubai host grand 'Sports Fiesta'

Udupi, Dec 25: ICYM of St Theresa Church, Kemmannu, emerged as the champions in the day-long ‘Sports Fiesta’, organised by the ICYM, Sacred Heart Church, Kolalgiri and Karval Milan Dubai. Different churches of Udupi diocese participated in the Festa on December 23, at Milagres College grounds.

ICYM of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva and St Antony Church, Sastana, secured second and third places. The teams were awarded Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively with trophy and certificate.

Thomas, Sandra from Korangrapady church and Nishal Kemmannu bagged individual championships.

Under tug of war category, Miyar Church team and Moodubelle Church team won first and second prizes respectively.

In the valedictory ceremony, the guest of the occasion Fr Eldo M Poul, vicar general, SMOS Cathedral, Brahmavar said, “All participants enjoyed this event. Unity, friendship and attachment were the focus of this event. We could see unity in diversity.”

Fr David Crasta, parish priest, St Antony Orthodox Syrian church, Kolalagiri said, “Since 18 years, the members of Karaval Milan Dubai are doing an excellent job. He wished all to keep up the same spirit in future.”

Fr Akshay Amanna, CSI Christa Jyothi Church, Korangrapady said, “Everyone can achieve impossible things with collective efforts.” He appreciated the organisers hosting for this event.

Fr Prakash Anil Castelino, parish priest of Sacred Heart of Jesus church, Kolalagiri in his presidential address said, “Today our long-time dream has come true.” He thanked all who supported, encouraged the sports meet. “Let us all live peacefully,” he advised.

Ashwin D’Souza, president, ICYM unit, Kolalagiri extended the welcome, Royston, PRO proposed vote of thanks, Prashanth and Sunil compered the programme.

Grand inauguration with march-past

At the inaugural ceremony, Msgr Dr Baptist Menezes, vicar general, diocese of Udupi presided over the inauguration of the Sports Festa. While, Pramod Madhwaraj, former minister, Charles Mascarenhas, president, Karval Milan Dubai, Fr Gerald Sandeep D’Mello, assistant parish priest, Sacred Heart Church, Kolalgiri, Dion D’Souza, president, ICYM, diocese of Udupi, Vincent D’Souza, vice president, Parish Pastoral Council, Kolalgiri, William D’Souza, secretary, Parish Pastoral Council, Kolalgiri, Ashwin D’Souza, president, ICYM, Kolalgiri were present on the occasion.

Pramod Madhwaraj inaugurated the event by hoisting the flag which was taken to the stage using a drone.

“There is a need to arrange such events in each church. Brotherhood is important and sports events are the best way to achieve it. One needs to give their 100 % to win,” he said.

Msgr Dr Baptist Menezes expressed his happiness to be part of the event. Especially, he recognised the CSI ad Syrian churches for taking part in the events.

The march-past by Udupi Denary team received the first place while Kallianpur Denary received the second.

Fr Prakash Anil Castelino, priest, Sacred Heart Church Kolalgiri, welcomed the gathering. Clearance Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks; Ronald Nazareth gave the introduction of Karval Milan organisation. Prashanth Lopes and Sachin Pedoor, compered the inauguration programme.
