"Who'll Remember Me?" Deve Gowda on being left out of Assam bridge launch

Bengaluru, Dec 26 (PTI): Former Prime Minister and JDS chief HD Deve Gowda on Tuesday said he was disappointment at not being invited for the inauguration of the country's longest rail road bridge -- Bogibeel Bridge in Assam though he had laid the foundation stone of it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 4.9 km long Bogibeel bridge across Brahmaputra river, built at a cost of around Rs. 5,900 crore.

The foundation stone for the project was laid by Gowda when he was the prime minister in 1997.

"Railway line to Kashmir, Delhi Metro and Bogibeel Railroad Bridge were among the projects I had sanctioned (as prime minister). I had sanctioned the budget of Rs. 100 crore for each of these projects and laid their foundation stones. People have forgotten today," Gowda said.

Replying to a question from reporters on the sidelines of a function as to how he felt about the inauguration of the project started by him, the former prime minister said he had given the nod for many projects.

To a question whether he received an invitation, Deve Gowda quipped, "Aiyo Rama! Who will remember me? Some newspapers might have mentioned about it."

On the delay in completing the project, he said, "That is where I differ. I completed the Hassan-Mysuru project in 13 months. I completed two bridges on time. Anagwadi bridge (across Ghataprabha). Go and see the bridge on Krishna river.

"Some people from Bombay Karnataka region say that Deve Gowda did not do anything (for the north Karnataka region), go and see it," he added.

The railroad bridge spans the waters of the Brahmaputra River. Bogibeel bridge will connect Assam's Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts, bordering Arunachal Pradesh. It will cut the travel time between the two points by four hours and help avoid a 170-km detour.

Even though Gowda was CM of Karnataka, I barely remember any of his contributions to Karnataka, leave alone Coastal region.

I remember one thing, as PM of India, he was well known for his sleepy face during important meetings.

Indians hardly remember him as ex-PM!!

Actually it was somebody else to finish the bridge work before Modi and invite Modi for the same.... Unfortunately it was not happened and Deve Gowda only put stone there nothing else...

Work for the people and get credit. After all who was decided to be the PM then ? It was not Gowda but Ramakrishna Hegde. But last minute cruelty against Hegde made Devegowda a curse for Karnataka...

It is absolutely correct not to invite him. We have no regrets....

Have you seen the photo of Advani during releasing Rs 100 commemorative coin in memory of Atal Bihari Vajpayee? See once that photo. Then you will realize that it was better, they have not invited Deve Gowda.

    Devegowdaji,

I totally agree with you that you had laid the foundation stone of it. but have you ever made an effort to see whether project is going on or not. this project is started by A B Vajpayee. but after his term congress stopped this project. Again when Modi become a PM, he continued this project & completed. Meanwhile have you urged the congress govt to complete this project? No... instead you & your son form the collaboration govt in Karnataka even though Rahul treated JDS as B team of BJP. Modi has given most respect to you but what kind of respect you gave him?

Mr.Kumaraswamy promised to renovate and restart it again after 20 years...If he keeps up his words, Coastal people will salute you including me...If someone inaugurates later with their effort ,don't blame them later...Ball is in your court...Please play well..

Do not worry Gowdaji, You have golden opportunities to do such projects in your home state Karnataka. You happened to lay foundation stone to Assam Bridge just becoz you were the PM of India that day. Otherwise, would you have thought of ASSAM anyways? People of Karnataka are still watching how you and your children are riding on the state's fortunes.......please get up .....You will get what you deserve for sure.....
