Reinstate Alok Verma as CBI Chief: Congress

New Delhi, Jan 12 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday demanded reinstatement of CBI Chief Alok Verma, terming his ouster from the investigating agency by the Prime Minister-led selection committee, a negation of "natural justice" and a decision taken to derail the Rafale probe.

Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi referred to the statement given to a newspaper by retired Supreme Court Justice A.K. Patnaik, who supervised the selection committee meetings, to accuse the ruling party of removing Verma from the CBI post in "haste and anxiety" and with a view to "hide matters of public interest".

"This is very serious, it is urgent, it is very important because ultimately the issues are the same, the issues have not changed. But, the issues highlight a tearing hurry, anxiety and urgency to hide vital matters of public interest. This government is running scared... I think, it is very clear... that there is much to hide, it is not a cupboard full of skeletons, it is only skeletons, there is no cupboard," Singhvi said in a press conference.

"Was it that the CBI Director was deep into the investigative stage of Rafale? Was it that he had evidence, witnesses, documents which would nail the multiple lies of this government, the Prime Minister, the ruling party president?" he wondered.

Apart from Verma's reinstatement, the party also demanded reconvening of the selection committee and giving him back the 77 days out of his two years' tenure which he lost due to the probe.

Earlier, Patnaik had told a newspaper that there was "no evidence" of corruption against Verma and that the committee took the decision in "very, very haste".

"There was no evidence against Verma regarding corruption. The entire enquiry was held on (CBI Special Director Rakesh) Asthana's complaint. I have said in my report that none of the findings in the CVC's report are mine," he had told The Indian Express.

Verma was transferred by the three-member selection committee -- including Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, who dissented against Verma's removal -- from the CBI Chief's post to the post of Director General of Fire Services on Wednesday, two days after the Supreme Court had reinstated him.

Verma on Friday quit the government service, alleging in a letter that "natural justice was scuttled" in inquiry involving him.

I am not supporting any particular party, it is become very common with Indian politicians that, who ever bureaucrats going against their command, they will get hard time. There is no book for these crazy politicians, rather they making their own rules. Very sad but true is our people become foolish again and again.

Dark days ahead is certain for Modi incase BJP lose in upcomming General polls.
Modi and Amit Shah is deadly ignorant about the facts that in politics "the power" is not an eaternal monopoly of any party. Do justice to the nation or face the consequences.

There is now little doubt that Verma has been ousted to protect Rakesh Asthana, the Gujarat cadre IPS said to be close to both Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah and who was foisted in the CBI as Special Director. It is also not in doubt that the duo wanted Ashthana to become the Director, CBI but had to relent in 2017 because his batch was relatively junior and was not in consideration for the job then. After Verma’s tenure would have got over, Asthana was clearly the heir apparent at the CBI headquarters.
The voluntary ‘retirement’ of Verma cannot bring closure to the scandal. There is certainly a need to inquire about the role of the CVC and the charges against Asthana to be investigated. There is a buzz that Asthana will go in appeal against the Delhi High Court’s dismissal of his plea to quash CBI’s FIR against him
The resignation of former CBI Director Alok Verma has brought embarrassment to Modi government that sacked him and demoted him to fire services. His resignation has been praised by media too.
A clearly scared Government cannot afford to allow ousted CBI chief Verma to spill the beans. So, expect him to be harassed in the coming days.
But if the grapevine is to be believed, it is Verma who is going to face the music. Modi and Amit Shah, the unforgiving duo, are said to have given directions to investigate the charges against Verma. Notwithstanding the pliable CVC which found no substance in six of the ten charges against him and despite Justice (Rtd) A.K. Patnaik telling the media that there were no charges of corruption against Verma, don’t be surprised if you find Verma getting arrested by the CBI , instead of Asthana.
Justice (retired) AK Patnaik, who was asked by the Supreme Court to monitor the CVC probe into corruption allegations against Alok Verma, has sensationally revealed that he found no evidence of corruption against the sacked CBI Director.
But Mr. Verma honest officer faces the wrath of Modi governance.
