Udupi, Jan 6: Tulu dramatist and veteran film artiste K N Tailor was honoured with the prestigious 'Tulu Ranga Ratna' award by ‘Rangabhoomi’ theatre organization here on Sunday January 5.
K N Tailor was conferred with the award during the three-day drama festival that went under way here on Sunday at the MGM College Muddana auditorium, as part of the 44th annual celebrations of the city-based 'Rangabhoomi'.
State home minister Dr V S Acharya, eminent litterateur Dr D K Chowta, 'Rangabhoomi' chairman Kutpady Anand Ganiga and others felicitated K N Tailor on the occasion.
Dr Acharya, speaking at the function, announced that a district level amphitheatre will be constructed soon, which will usher in a golden era for the general public, to realize their long-cherished dream of having a mega venue specifically devoted for theatre activities.
K N Tailor, while acknowledging the honour conferred on him, recalled the tribulations he suffered during the poverty-ridden days in his quest for becoming a theatre artiste. All that he got from acting in plays was just name and fame but no monetary gains, he explained.
Eminent litterateur and arts enthusiast Dr D K Chowta said that culture is as essential as that of food, accommodation and rest. Without culture, life turns out to be a boring affair, he noted.
Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions at the function. 'Uchalya', a play staged by 'Rangasiri' troupe from Hassan and directed by Mahadev Hadapada with play wright Chandrakant Pokale bagged the first prize.
'Kalanjali', a souvenir brought out on the occasion, was released at the venue.
Theatre Camp director Mandya Ramesh, Manipal Ujjady Developers proprietor Purushottam P Shetty, sub registrar Parameshwar Rao, 'Rangabhoomi' office bearers P Vasudev Rao, Tallur Shivaram Shetty and Upendra were present.
