Puttur, Sep 22: The fifth additional district and sessions court has sentenced two accused to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh in connection with the murder of youth Karthik Merla at Sampya.

The murder took place on September 3, 2019, at Sampya, under the jurisdiction of the Puttur rural police station.

Then police inspector and investigating officer Nagesh Kadri conducted a thorough investigation and submitted a chargesheet to the court against four accused: Preethu alias Preethesh Sulaya, Charan, Kiran alias Mani, and Santhu alias Stevan Monteiro. A case had been registered under sections 504, 341, 302, and 212 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

After examining the evidence, judge Sadananda Naik of the fifth additional district and sessions court found Preethu alias Preethesh Sulaya and Kiran alias Mani guilty of the crime.

The court awarded them life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3 lakh under section 302 of the IPC. Additionally, they were sentenced to three months of simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 under section 341 of the IPC.

Meanwhile, the court acquitted Santhu alias Stevan Monteiro of the charges. Another accused in the case, Charan, has already passed away.

Public prosecutor Jayanthi K presented the arguments on behalf of the state.
