Udupi, Jan 9: Five students of Mangalore Sri Devi Hotel Management College, who were picnicking  at the beach near Kaup Light House  here were rescued by the  local fishermen on Thursday January 8.  Another student was reported missing.

The rescued students have been identified as Hratvik (18), Jabir (18), Jalpan (18), Bijal (18) and Pooja (18) all Gujarati students studying at Sri Devi Hotel Management College while another student Bhavin (20) is reported missing.

Thesix students, including two girls,  had gone there to have fun at about 11.30 am on Thursday.  Despite the warning sign boards displayed in the vicinity of Light House, all the students ventured into the sea to have a swim.  The fishermen spotted them being tossed around by violent waves and being dragged  far away from the shore. The fishermen succeeded in rescuing five students who were screaming for help.  The rescued were given first aid by the altruist  fishermen, who then continued their search for the lone missing student.

The recurring tragedies highlight the need to employ life guards at the shore near the Kaup Light House, since it has the potential of promoting tourism and picnickers arrive here whenever they have weekends and holidays.  The holiday for these six students had turned out to be a  nightmare for them.

Kaup police have  registered a case in this regard and the search operation  is under way to trace  Bhavin.

I agree with SK. Authority should take action in order to warn non localites as they are unaware of the depth of Kaup beach, and also one Police outpost should be placed in such places. Kaup is Well Known Tourism place in Coastal Karnataka, and its reputation shouldn't be ruined from such incidents.
