Mangalore Jan.10:  Independence movement of India and Nationalism movement are different. While the freedom  struggle was anti-British, Nationalism movement was launched to save Indian culture,   said Dr B  Surendra Rao, Professor, department of history, Mangalore University.
He was speaking after inaugurating  national seminar on `Facets of Indian Nationalism’ in Besant Women’s college.

`During every Independence day  celebrations, I ask every one  who  wishes me with the question, `have we  really  got  independence?’ he  said. " We are not nationalized and  the ndependence that  we  have  got  is only  in  paper  but not in  governance, police and administrative system. When we got independence, we constituted British like system for rule," he explained.

"Nationalism movement or struggle was not introduced at the  time of  the freedom struggle but since the times of the great  Indian kings. During the rule of Chandra Guptha Mourya  of Mourya dynasty as well as the times of  other kings and also at the time of  Ghori-Ghazni attack  nationalism movement was on," said Rao.

In 18th century Rajaram Mohan Roy  and  after him, Bala Gangadhar Tilak were engaged with the Nationalism movement, he explained.

Correspondent of the Women’s National Education Society, Mohan Nayak Presided over the  function. Principal of the college, Majula K T  welcomed.  Seminar convener Dr Savithri K  was  present.

Besant College is organizing the seminar with the sponsorship  of the  University Grants Commission (UGC) for two days.
