Mangalore: Katipalla Limping Back to Normalcy - Three Arrested

Mangalore, Jan. 11: Riot- torn Katipalla slowly returned to normalcy with the presence of a full police force in the area.
Violence had erupted following the murder of a youth and injury to another. Many shops and houses were attacked and vehicles damaged by irate crowds.
Tanzeem (Shamsuddin)(18 ) a first year B.com student who died on the spot and injured Rahamatulla(33), who is reported to have arrived from Dubai on a holiday, is recovering in a private hospital.
On Sunday, Police stopped Vehicular movements towards Katipalla and Krishnapura where the murder took place. These places wore a deserted look. People of the area also stayed indoors.
Superintendent of police, Sathish Kumar said, 3 persons have been arrested in connection with the murder and 13 others have been taken into custody in connection with the violence that followed.
Extra police force is deployed at Surathkal. Police from Karwar and Udupi have also joined hands with the local force to maintain law and order, he added.
Sathish Kumar claimed that, the incident was on account of a gang war, and a group of people attacked the two on gang rivalry.
District In-charge minister Krishna Palemar appealed to the public to maintain peace. He also visited the victim’s house in Katipalla .
Although peace is returning to Surathkal, the police have taken security measures all over the city and areas affected by violence. The shops in Suratkal still remained closed with only a few people seen venturing out. Under the direction of senior police officials including Inspector General of police-Western range- A.M. Prasad, police escort is given to the few buses plying from Surathkal and interior areas like Kana, Bala .
Deputy commissioner, V. Ponnuraj has called for a peace committee meeting in the evening.
Section 144, and prohibitory orders clamped by Taluk Tahashildar Raju Mogaveera, will continue till Jan. 13 in the affected areas.
