Mangalore, Jan 13: Although peace has returned to Suratkal, Katipalla, Krishnapura and surrounding areas after turning tense in the backdrop of the killing of a motor-bike borne youth on Saturday January 10, prohibitory order issued under section 144 has been extended till the morning of Friday January 16.
In an incident that would have vitiated the atmosphere in the region again, four youths who came in two motor bikes, reportedly brandished sharp weapons at Raghu Shetty, a tender-coconut vendor functioning near the Suratkal post office on Monday. He said the youths had their faces covered. Shetty was about to open his shop for business when the incident occured. Even after Shetty started running from the place, the gang chased him. Shetty entered the home of Sanjeeva located nearby and Sanjeeva's dog chased away the miscreants, it is gathered.
The police say that the physical features of the youths as described by Shetty match with the accused who had made an attempt to murder a student named Vinod Kumar from Dharwad who was taking part in a seminar at NITK Suratkal on January 10.
Tight security continues to be in place in Krishnapura and Katipalla. The police hope to make more arrests soon. The peace committee meeting which was scheduled for Monday could not take place.
Seveal cases of damage to property have been registered in Suratkal police station. Buses started plying to Krishnapura and Katipalla early noon on Monday and only a few buses were operated. Injured Rahamatulla (31) is recovering in hospital.
