The policemen say that minor skirmishes that occurred during a cricket match in Katipalla play ground was the reason for the enmity between the two groups. Sachin, one of the accused, reportedly played on behalf of Ajay Cricketers in that match and a verbal duel had ensued between two groups during which Tanzeem (19) who lost life later in the said incident had weilded a wicket for hitting Sachin. Rahamatulla (31) is said to have taken sides with Tanzeem and exchanged heated words with the would-be assailants.

In another related incident, during the procession of the Ganeshotsav of the Fifth Block Krishnapur last year, Tanzeem allegedly threw a plastic cover at the idol, which had angered Tilak who saw the incident.  Enmity between the groups grew and the people from both sides used to exchange angry stares whenever they met on the roads, it is gathered.

The two hired a car from Navin from Bejai Mangalore on January 5, saying that they required it for some marriage and paid an advance amount of Rs 10,000. The accused expected that Rahamatulla and Tanzeem being friends can be cornered together. However, they could not execute their plans on January 6 and 7. They got the chance to pounce upon the duo when the two were returning together in a motor bike after watching a football match in the Seventh Block of Krishnapura. The accused attacked the two with swords near Deepak Bar. Rahamatulla succeeded in running away from the spot while Tanzeem died on the spot.

The accused reportedly then went to Kateel via MRPL-Mangalpet and threw the blood-stained clothes in the river there. They parked the car at Kateel and fled. Nagesh Devadiga, who is a close friend of the two, agreed to be a party to their plan, it is learnt.

In connection with the attempt to murder Raghu Shetty, a tender coconut vendor near Suratkal post office as a backlash of the above incident, the Suratkal policemen have arrested Abdul Salam (28) from Kana near Suratkal. Three other accused are at large.  The policemen have said that they have video graphed the violent incidents that occurred in Katipalla after the murder. They have promised to ensure that the affected people get compensation for the losses and also to nab the culprits involved soon.

Very sad to see that people of India and particulary Mangaloreans are using religion to kill each other. It will become very difficult for India to remain one.
