Bangalore: Republic Day Flower show at Lalbagh from Jan 17

Bangalore, Jan 16: The Indian Republic Day horticultural flower show will be inaugurated on Saturday January 17 at 3 pm at the Lalbagh Glass House in the city by Dileep Rao, administrator, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. B P Kaniram, secretary, horticultural department, government of Karnataka, will be the chief guest under the chairmanship of Dr G K Vasanth Kumar.
Ikebana, Indian floral art, vegetable carving, Dutch flower arrangements, dry flowers, Thai-art, ‘Jannur’, and bonsai shows will be inaugurated on Sunday January 18 at 3 pm at the Dr M H Marigowda Memorial Hall, Lalbagh, by Dr Umadevi Bidari, wife of Shankara Bidari, commissioner of police, Bangalore city.
The information was conveyed to media persons in a press conference held on Friday January 17, at Dr Marigowda Memorial Hall, Lalbagh. The press meet was attended by Dr M Jagadeesh, ex-officio secretary, Dr Ashwath, joint director, Horticultural Gardens, and Dr Vasanth Kumar, chairman.
The Mysore Horticultural society was founded in 1912 by then superintendent G H Krimbigal. Since 1922, the society had been organizing bi-annual flower shows known as winter and summer shows. But since 1951, the agricultural and horticultural societies have been jointly organizing the shows, now called Indian Republic and Indian Independence shows.
The Glass House which is the venue of the flower show was constructed in1889. Over 200 varieties of flora which flower only in winter are the highlight of this year’s show. For security reasons, door frame metal detectors, hand metal detectors, and security cameras, are being deployed at the entrance to Lalbagh, the Glass House, and other places.
Interesting stalls such as ‘Hasire usiru’, and ‘Parisara sneha’, will be on display. Entry to the show will close at 5 pm and the show will close at 7 pm. Entry for school children will be free on Saturday January 24.
