Udupi, Feb 2: All India Fishermen Forum chief organising secretary and Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Cooperative Fish Marketing Federation president Yashpal Suvarna has welcomed the Central government’s move of installing separate department for fisheries which was a long pending demand of fishermen.

He has also appreciated the loan facility at the rate of 2% interest for fisheries and animal husbandry and Rs 3,000 pension to fishermen above 60 years of age for development of fisheries thereby strengthening fishermen financially.

“All India Fishermen Forum had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister Arun Jaitley in January and submitted a memorandum in this connection. The quick action by the centre and concern by the Prime Minister with regard to fishermen is commendable,” he said.

“The government at the Centre has decided to revive ports under Sagaramala scheme, start separate ministry and monthly pension for elderly fisherwomen and bring about several revolutionary measures. Fishermen should make use of them and become economically independent,” he said.

“Opposition parties have resorted to unnecessary criticism about the budget. The budget in fact is far-sighted.” said Yashpal Suvarna in a press statement.
