Mangaluru: Police commissioner inaugurates 30th road safety week

Mangaluru Feb 4: Mangaluru city police commissioner T R Suresh inaugurated 30th road safety week – ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha’ here at Police Community Hall on Monday, February 4. The week is jointly organised by Mangaluru city Police commissionarate, DK District Administration and Road Transport Authority. Road safety week will be held from February 4 to 10.

Addressing the gathering, Police commissioner T R Suresh said, "The road safety week under the theme ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha’ which was inaugurated today should not be limited for a week but should celebrated the whole year.”

"Road safety week is all about creating awareness about the traffic rules and hence reducing accidents,” said T R Suresh.



Canara Bank assistant general manager Ramdas said," Today it has become common to share accident videos on social media. Instead of that we should strive in to save a life as there are many people dying because of accidents. To curb down accidents we should strictly follow the traffic rules".

Prior to the formal function, Police commissioner T R Suresh flagged off the road safety rally from Balmatta circle to Police Bhavan. Several students holding placards created awareness about road safety and took part in the rally.

Throughout the road safety week several programmes have been planned. Hoardings will be installed to create awareness about traffic rules within the limits of information department such as places like Wenlock hospital, DC office and Mini Vidhana Soudha.

50 helmets will be distributed to the motorists from Red FM. Informative programmes will be conducted in colleges and schools on traffic rules and violations. Street plays on traffic awareness by Roshni Nilaya students will be performed at junctions of Mangaluru. Special awareness drive on hazards of driving without seat belt and talking over phone while driving will be held.

Free eye test for vehicle drivers, special drive on shrill horns, use of helmets, competitions for students like drawing and pick and speak will be held.

Valedictory ceremony will be held on February 10. During this programme free spectacles will be distributed. The good samaritan, best drivers from Police, KSRTC and RTO department will be honored. Prizes will be distributed for various competitions held.

DCP crime and traffic Uma Prashanth welcomed the gathering.

DCP law and order Hanumantharaya, superintendent of police Laxmi Prasad, ACP traffic Manjunath Shetty, RTO officer John B Misquith, KCCI president Abdul Hameed and others were present.

    What a cruel joke!! All for show. Waste of money
    The RTO, if they are seriously interested in road safety would first issue driving licenses after strict and proper testing. Driving licenses are issued to anybody and everybody who can sit in a driver's seat and pay their bribe. There are several Daijiworld readers in the Arabian gulf who would have undergone license testing there and found how strict it is. Even 70years after independence we don not have a testing track even in the major cities.
    Roads in india have no or hardly any markings and signage. Whatever is there, is hidden behing ads and flexes of our political and local leaders.
    The Police are not able to enforce traffic rules strictly for a variety of reasons starting from staff shortage to corruption to a belligerent public.
    Lastly there is the Indian public who have a scant sense of personal safety, civic responsiblity. Public property is regarded as something to be abused and not safeguarded. People drive and ride on the roads in whatever direction they want and abuse anybody who questions them. Road safety needs to imparted in schools.
    Without taking concrete steps in solving these issues, holding a road safety week every year is only a show, like applying an antiseptic ointment on a cancerous ulcer

    Great initiative but follow it up strictly otherwise it will be a waste of time and efforts. Making drivers responsible for their acts is only possible when stern action is taken on the spot.

    Traffic police will have to be stricter only then road safety will improve. Let them start catching people riding without number plates, who are a danger to the whole society.

    I hope that all will follow this 'safety on roads' through out the year. I think all vehicle owners will join hands with our Traffic department.

    When will the corporation build good footpaths? When will the traffic police and RTO prohibit builders and developers from using public space like footpath and road used for private construction purpose? We see quite often cement mixer's and even building material kept on footpaths and roads and hence obstructing pedestrian's from using the footpath. All this is a part of road safety. Students should be responsible citizens by using the road and footpath.
