Mangalore: Veteran Artist B G Mohammed Passes Away
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RD)

Mangalore, Jan 26: Veteran city artist eighty eight year old Bolar Gulam (BG) Mohammed passed away on Monday January 26.

He was the recipient of Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy honorary award in 2003 for his total commitment to art since he began his career in 1953 by setting up B G M Fine Arts with just 3 assistants.  He had also bagged Karnataka Rajyotsav award in 2008.  Over the years, he had mentored almost all the city artists who have set up their own art galleries.  Art seems to be running in the entire family as all his sons including daughter-in-laws were engaged in same profession.

Bolar Gulam Mohammed, popularly known as B G Mohammed was born on October 11, 1920 in Mangalore to Dr Mohammed Ali and Raheem B I

His father was a great philosopher and doctor. He guided his son in respecting all religions and taught him the true meaning of life.

B G Mohammed left his studies while studying in SSLC in Board High School Udupi and started learning art in the guidance of Mangesh Shirali, a famous artist in Udupi through a relative.

Mangesh Shirali took him as a student.  Later Padukone Srinivasa Rao molded him as a good artist.

The significance to be noted here is that both the teachers didn't charge any fee for training B G Mohammed!

Taking inspiration from his gurus Mohammed gave life to human weaknesses and tragedies of daily life on paper and canvas using water colour and oil paint.

There was a time, when artists and painters used to create masterpieces and such masterpieces are sold for a fortune today, in business houses like Sotheby's and Christy's.

BG Mohammed has taught the art of drawing to thousands of young people in Mangalore and the surrounding areas.

    Sir ,
You are Amazing .You did enough research on the great soul who made me hold the paint brush at the age of 10 . What I learnt from Him and his eldest Son Shabbir Ali is
unparalled .That sort of training is now called Industrial Design . And no institute touches the standards set by B.G.Mohammed .
When I start a Artistic design say a Car Modification I do not use the computer .I start it on canvas and oil painting in car in Isometric view with colors / shades match to my satisfaction . Only then it is put into digital form and orthographic views generated by my Digital artist Mr Salgaonkar . I am In touch with Shabbir Ali even now .
    With warm Regards

GREATNESS OF A GURU CAN BE JUDGED BY HIS WORK & ALSO BY THE AFFINITY OF HIS STUDENTS EVEN WHEN THEY HAVE GROWN. ARTIST B G MOHAMMED APPEARS TO BE ONE SUCH BY THOSE CRITERIA.

Like Eddie Sequeira, I too was a student of late B G Mohammed who taught us not only fine arts but several values of life. A great man of high thinking but simple living. He was a profound artist, his free hand sketches and the water color landscapes were amazing and a feast to the  eyes. We, his old students who have seen him closely over the years, hold special regard for him.His art school was a home away from home for us and his house was a welcome haven at any time! His death is a big loss to the artists community of Mangalore and to the art world in particular. United with my family, I extend my sincere and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family. May God Almighty grant eternal rest to the departed soul.

BG Sir - you are no more and it is one of the saddest days in my life - but your memories on the hearts of your students (like me) will never never never be forgotten. More than learning art from you, we learnt humanity. You were humble, down to earth, kind, friendly and did not distinguish between rich and poor, caste or creed.

Coming to your class was like a second home to all of us and your fatherly guidance can never be forgotten. Your passing away is indeed a great loss not only to me, Mangalore but also to the world of artists. May your soul rest in peace. Akthar Ma'am, Sabbir Shameer and Kabeer - please continue with your father's mission of "art with all your heart"

Bolar Gulam Mohammed, one of the finest Artist I have ever come across was my Guru, at times my elder brother - father from whom I studied the 'fine arts' drawing & painting and more than that learn about the finer things of life. Those early years (1966-1970) I spent in the small BGM School, sometimes with their family in their 'homely' house, were the best years of my life. I continued to be his student for many more years and I am proud to say that I am one of the very few of his students who have taken Art as profession. I was fortunate to see him one last time just last month and I will miss him. I along with my family extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Mrs Aktar, sons Shabbir, Khabeer, Shameer and their families, and all of his students whom he always considered as his family. May Almighty Allah rest his noble soul in peace. Eddie Sequeira, Doha - Qatar
