Church rift over Catholic stance on political situation

New Delhi, Feb 12 (IANS): The Catholic Bishops Confernece of India (CBCI) council for Laity has launched a nationwide drive to formulate a Catholic stance on the current political situation in the country ahead of the general election, a move disputed by CBCI sources, saying the council of Laity is "not a representative of the Catholic body."

However, the council for Laity will organize a series of events in the run-up to the general election to raise issues within the community such as attack on churches, growing danger of communalism and challenges to Catholic faith in India.

The CBCI has 14 regional councils and 174 Diocesan Pastoral Councils.

Among the topics that will be thrown up for discussions include violation of constitutional rights and denial of minority welfare schemes to the Christians, challenges to areas of service like education institutions, hospitals and orphanages and growing dangers of communalism.

As long as the Indian Constitution guarantees equal rights to its citizens, the minority /majority card should not be used in political campaigns. The poor must have welfare schemes and not the "minority". If Christians fall in the poor group then the welfare scheme must be applicable to them. This is my view.

    Mr. KRPrabhu, Mangalore/Bangalore,
Problem with us with Hindus is we are not organized like minority community. We do not have clear Leadership, We have discrimination from us with in our many casts, regions and genders. Minority Leaders are Selfless persons and consider whole community of their is one family. We the Hindus work for our self and to our immediate family. We are so corrupt We not only bribe to our fellow Citizens We bribe to our Gods and God man. We hardly know our holly books and do not learn/practice any morals & ethics from our Holy books or from our religious Leaders. May Lord Krishna save us from our own short comings.

Well said . Sooner the common man realises that they are being taken for a ride on such issues hopefully they will change their mindset and be cautious on whom to nominate as their representatives.

Sir, You are commenting as if minority communities and Christian / Catholic communities in particular are living in this country by mere hand outs from the governments of the day and also from the Hundies of your Lord Venkatramana Temples.

You forget the fact that irrespective of the religious following every one is a Citizen of this Country and has the right to live and practice their religion within the framework of our Constitution.

Like anyone else we too discharge our obligations in the service of the country in every field and pay our taxes to the government and help the society at large without discrimination based on Caste, Creed, Tribe and colour., like GSB's are only for GSBs. We are living in 21st Century and not in 10th century.
