Pub Culture Against Indian Ethos, Must Stop: Ramadoss

Press Trust of India

NEW DELHI, Jan 30: Closing ranks with leaders opposing pub culture in the aftermath of the Mangalore incident, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Friday said it was against Indian ethos and asserted that the proposed National Alcohol Policy would help curb it.

"We definitely condemn the incident where women were attacked, but the pub culture must stop. It is because of this that youth in the country have taken to drinking in a big way," Ramadoss said at a press conference here.

Linking youngsters visiting pubs to increased rates of accidents due to drunken driving, he said, "In India, 40 per cent of road accidents are alcohol-related."

These young people not only jeopardise their lives but are also a danger to others on the roads.

"It is not our culture. If it goes this way I don't think India will progress," Ramadoss said adding, most of the people losing their lives due to such road accidents and alcoholism were in their early twenties, which are the most productive years.

Unfortunately over the recent years, there has been a huge percentage of people taking to alcohol.

There is also a study which says that in the last five to six years there is an increase of 60 per cent among the youth who have taken to drinking, he said.

I fully agree with Mr. Ramadoss but it should be stopped by not issueing the licences to the so called pubs. I also agree with Ramasena's sentiments but the way of approch is totally wrong. Ramasena has no right to attack anyone. It can only inform police or protest peacefully.

Yes, what about corruption as Roshan says, and more.... Do vulgar and raw violence in movies and sexually suggestive movies/videos/magazines auger well with this so called Ethos ?

Hello Ramadoss, Pub culture must stop - agreed what about Wine shop culture and Arrack shop culture and strip dance and body expose culture in Indian films. Keep Awake you fellows. Even wearing Pants & Shirts are not Indian culture. There are Tens & Thousands of things which are not of Indian culture and why don't you stop all those things.

I too agree with Mr. Ramadoss, but have comments to add to the one already made. Look at numerous other bad and equally dangerous evils we have acquired as a ‘fringe benefit’ from globalization: Vulgar Videos specially involving sexually suggestive dances with swivelling and gyrating hips galore scattered all over cable TV Vulgar/ribald and/or sexually suggestive photographs from adult movies openly appearing in many Indian Newspapers and also Film Magazines (available to all non adults) Open Sale of Vulgar and/or sexually promiscuous adult magazines available to all the under aged (if they want to buy or at least open and have a quick look). Highly violent movies shown on many a so-called Video buses at least till recently and Violent TV Programme e.g. called “Ankhen” on National TV ? What then is our much cherished and celebrated Indian ethos the Health minister talks about ? Is it by any chance related to Hypocricy ?

You are correct Mr. Ramadoss. Many of our leaders are forgetting to condemn pub culture in a hurry of condemning pub attack.

why not ban alcohol totally? he should ask his government to stop liquor in the country rather than giving his piece of advice now and then!

These developments are very interesting and very ironic. Perhaps the anti-pub fraternity is unaware of the importance of "soma" among the residents of devalok. Soma is a euphemism for alcohol and being part of Hindu mythology is very much a part of Indian "ethos". And.....Call marijuana a "hazard" and bhang a "prasad". Why not ban bhang as well? Those sadhus up north who do nothing else but smoke pot are treated with reverence, but some girls who are just having a nice time in a pub are beaten up. An interesting world of contradictions we live in.

Agree Ramadoss. But what about corruption? is it Indian tradition? Being the Union Health minister - and being at the helm of grants at the ICMR, it has become Indian traditions to keep aside ...... money. - I know what I am talking about! Before raising your finger - look at yourself first!
