Mangaluru, Mar 2: "A special operation will be conducted in the city against no registration number plates on the vehicle, blaring horn, use of tinted glasses above the permissible tint percentage limit, and parking of vehicle in no parking area," said police commissioner of the city Sandeep Patil.

Patil was responding to the queries of citizens of the city in the police phone-in programme that was held at his office on Friday, March 1.

A caller said that some street lights are not burning in Lalbagh, Laydhill and Hathill areas of the city. Some youths scream under the influence of alcohol while driving their cars on weekend days and disturb the local residents. In addition, they party and throw the garbage on the road side, which is causing inconvenience to the residents of the nearby apartments. Responding to this complaint, the commissioner said that this will be considered seriously and action will be taken under the Karnataka police act.

A citizen complained that pedestrians are unable to walk on the footpath near Pandeshwar Vidyarthi Bhavan because of the vendors selling juice and eatables on the footpath itself. The commissioner assured of suitable action.

A concerned caller said that in many buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles indicator lights, break lights and reflectors are not lighting. This poses danger to the vehicles following these heavy vehicles from behind and leads to accidents. The commissioner asked the president of the Bus Owners' association to take corrective action and also informed the RTO also to look into the matter.

A caller suggested making the PVS circle in the city signal free like the Bejai circle. The commissioner said that they will investigate on this matter and take necessary action. The commissioner also assured that all the Zebra crossings in the city will be painted.

Commissioner suggests use of Twitter

"Twitter will play an important role in solving the traffic emergencies in the city. This is more transparent too. This is in use in cities like Bengaluru. In Mangaluru also twitter account system should be made popular," suggested new Commissioner of Police (CP) Sandeep Patil.

This was the 107th police phone-in programme and 17 calls were received.

Towing of vehicles will be a dream come true for the Mangalore pedestrians, since the pedestrians sometime cannot walk because of the vehicles are parked on the footpath. The traffic police should be strict with vehicles parked on the footpath.

It is good to see and observe that the Present Commissioner of Police Mr. Sandeep Patil is paying considerable attention to the prevailing traffic situation in Mangalore. Apart from what is said, it is expedient to point out the parallel parking of buses, and the bus drivers leaving a wide gap between the foot paths and left side of the vehicle for the passengers to alight and disembark.

It is necessary that special attention should be directed towards drivers of two-wheelers and auto rickshaws who constantly overtake other vehicles from the wrong side.

IS THE PHONE -IN IS RESTRICTED TO MANGALORE CITY ALONE OR OUTSKIRTS LIKE BAIKAMPADY INDL. AREA ALSO COVERED ? IF SO LET THE R.T.O. ENSURE SMOOTH TRAFFIC ON HIGHWAYS WITHOUT ANY PARKING/ BUS STOPS WHICH POSE MAJOR TRAFFIC PROBLEMS.
