Model teacher strives to develop government school on his own

Daijiworld Media Network - Raichur (MS)

Raichur, Mar 2: The government higher primary school in the taluk looks similar to any private school with computer laboratory, electricity, water facility, planting of saplings and building of huts. There is no dearth in the number of students of this school also.

Earlier, drinking water and clean toilets were not available in the school. So the attendance of students was less. Mohan Kumar, teacher of the school, who saw this, thought that some solution should be found to overcome these issues.

Mohan Kumar's wife also is a teacher in the government school and got transferred to Raichur some years ago. Both of them decided to develop the school.

First they built a computer laboratory from the funds provided by MNCs. But the computers could not work as there was no electricity in the school. Mohan has struggled for two long years in order get the electricity connection for the school.

Mohan wrote letter to the concerned politicians, local educational officers and other government officers citing the fundamental infrastucture issues of the school. When he approached the Karnataka Electricity Corporation for electricity connection, they said that eight electric poles are required around the school but they can provide only three due to shortage of funds. Mohan funded the money for the rest of the electric poles from his pocket. The students of the school and the villagers were elated when electricity connection was finally given to the school.

The next issue was that of drinking water and toilets. The students had to walk one km to use the toilet. During summer it was very difficult for the students to walk that distance. So Mohan wrote letters to government officials to dig a borewell near the school. After six months of continuous followup, the borewell digging work started. Six attempts of digging borewell failed. However, on the seventh attempt, luckily, water was found. Now not only the students but the villagers also make use of the borewell.

Mohan has planted saplings all around the school with the help of the students. They are watered everyday by the students themselves.

The next aim of teacher Mohan is to teach the students in English medium. He says that 'Apart from the English syllabus given by the government, I will try to teach them the grammar so that it will help them in their higher education."

The nearby villagers and the students of the school highly appreciate the efforts of model teacher Mohan, who has done yeomen service to the school.
