Udupi, Feb 13: “Electricity is not only useful, but also very precious. We should try to conserve electricity in every possible manner. Solar energy, in present times,, can be a very good alternative source of energy to save us from power shortages in the future," said veteran  journalist and  former chairman of Prasar Bharati, Dr M V Kamath, while addressing the students on the second day of the three-day power conservation campaign organized by the students of Manipal Institute of Communication in Manipal recently.

“Manipal being the town of the youth, is the best place to have such campaigns, as students tend to waste electricity carelessly in their day-to-day lives. I hope this campaign will create awareness among them and they will be more careful in future and ensure that power is switched off before leaving their rooms,” said Dr M V Kamath before concluding his speech.

During the campaign, more than 2,000 students from various constituent colleges of Manipal University took oath to the affect that they will not waste electricity in future. The campaign that ended on Wednesday February 11, also saw street plays by MIC’s Theatre club “Kalamanch” at various places in Manipal along with live band performances by the band “Exile.” Students were also informed about various facts related to electricity consumption through posters and pamphlets which were respectively put on all the notice boards of the town and distributed among students.

“The three-day preliminary awareness campaign was a prelude to the main event, “Power Off for an hour,” which will take place on the 27th February as a part of the Article 19, the national-level communication fest being organized every year by the students of MIC. Conceptualized as a drive against reckless power consumption, ‘Power Off’ will try to create a complete awareness among the students regarding the importance of electricity. Candles will light the whole town of Manipal for an hour between 8 and 9 pm and there shall be music,” said Ragamalika Karthikeyan, one of the organizers of the event.

“Famous Parallel films actor, screenwriter, film director and social activist Rahul Bose, who has been involved with several noble causes, will also be a part of the march which will travel through the roads of Manipal along with all the participating students of various constituent colleges of Manipal University,” she informed further.
