Manipal, Mar 7: The annual three-day ‘Namma Angadi’ expo organised by students of School of Communication (SOC), Manipal and The Concerned for Working Children will be held on March 8.

Addressing a press meet at Udupi press club on March 7, School of Communication director Padma Rani said that this will be the 16th year the expo is being organised and goods which are designed and produced by artisans of Namma Bhoomi will be available for sale.

“SOC is providing a platform to artisans of the NGO Namma Bhoomi. Goods and items designed and produced by the artisans of Namma Bhoomi will be sold at the expo. Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati will preside over the inaugural ceremony,” she said.

“The focus of Namma Angadi is to provide a platform to display the skills of local artisans from Kundapura. This year a wide variety of products will be put up for sale including apparels with latest designs, hand-made jewellery, home decor and local food items. The proceeds of this event will be given to Namma Bhoomi to educate the children housed at Namma Bhoomi,” she added.

The Concerned for Working Children is a non-profit organisation, founded in 1985 which tackles issues surrounding child labour and aims to empower underprivileged children. The NGO is also responsible for the conception of Namma Bhoomi, a community campus housing a residential school for underprivileged children.

Prices are deliberately kept reasonable to appeal to the widest possible section of the community. The goods sold at Namma Angadi are sustainable, eco-friendly and hand-crafted but will also feature modern designs by interns from institutions like the National Institute of Design. Selection of the product range is based on the needs of the rural consumer that might also have an urban use. All product materials are sourced from natural and eco-friendly sources – usually from the forest, villages or plantations.

Over the years, hundreds of artisans and craft persons have joined the Namma Angadi collective and found a new market for their goods.

Clay and terracotta products, garments, bamboo products, jute products, lavancha products, wooden products and accessories will be on sale.

The expo on March 8, 9 and 10th will be held at the premises of School of Communication (SOC), Manipal and will be open from 9 am to 8 pm.
