Decision on joining BJP only after consulting supporters: Sumalatha Ambareesh

Bengaluru, Mar 7(PTI): Sumalatha, wife of late actor-turned-politician Ambareesh on Thursday said no one from the BJP has contacted her, and if there is an offer from BJP, she will take a call only after consulting her supporters.

"I too have heard the statements (of BJP leaders), but no one has contacted me directly. If they come, I will get to know what is in their mind, what kind of support they can give me or what's in their mind on this issue," said Sumalatha.

Sumalatha speaking to reporters in Mysuru said, "If they come, I will speak and take my decision... no one has contacted me yet." Asked if she would join the BJP, Sumalatha said she will seek opinion of the people before deciding.

"My intention is to respond to public need and stand in their support. Which way to go is still not clear to me, as all these days I had expectation about a Congress ticket. Now what should be my way ahead, I will ask people there is such an offer and see what they have to say," she added.

Meanwhile, BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa Thursday said no discussions have happened on inducting Sumalatha into the party.

With the Congress ruling out fielding Sumalatha from the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, saying the seat would go to its coalition partner JD(S), clamour is growing within the BJP to induct her and field her in the seat. "No discussions have taken place in this regard...we will take a call," Yeddyurappa told reporters in Hubballi in response to a question on supporting Sumalatha in Mandya.

Asked about inducting her into the BJP, he said "no discussions have taken place. Even before talking, it will not be right for me to comment on this".

Asserting that the BJP is poised to perform well in the upcoming polls, Yeddyurappa said, "Things are convenient, we will win 22 seats (in Karnataka). It is certain that Modi will become prime minister by winning 300 seats. We are working for it."

Sections within the BJP believe that Sumalatha joining the party and fielding her as candidate in Mandya will help the saffron party, which doesn't have much presence in the Vokkaliga bastion.

JD(S) has already indicated that Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy is likely to be the coalition candidate there.

The Congress has conceded JD(S)' demand for the seat, despite growing pressure within the grand old party to field Sumalatha, herself a popular south Indian actress, as the regional party has a sitting MP in Mandya.

There are also reports about Sumalatha contesting independently, backed by those within the Congress, who are opposed to the party conceding the seat to JD(S); and the BJP too may lend its support.

People from movie back ground are used to flashy life! They hardly done any good to their constituency. An educated, non corrupt and development oriented candidate can only contribute towards the success of our nation. At the moment people are using politics as a tool to gain wealth and fame. Voters too are going after emotions, waves, cast and religion. and ideology! Very few voters are urging genuine development!

I think she should be given a ticket from Congress! When Priyanka Vadra without any experience and a UP debacle under her name, can be elevated to a leader, when RaGa with 30 defeats can be a party presidentt, just bcos they are the 'family' , WHY NOT SUMALATHA?? Cong has to show some courage and discipline rather than bend down for anything the Gowdas say.

Many things with Sumalathaji has said ... Mainly that
" Her late husband did not do family politics"
" Those who used to sweet talk when Ambareesh was there are not be seen"
" Things have changed very much since Ambi's absence, even his enemies were fed by him even if they came home"
    Tell us the complete story....
Sumalathaji is certain to win ..whichever party she contests from.
Forget Nikhil Vikhil...the non entity ..who behaves like he has am 'right to entitlement'.
The other day I had told you all about cunning Kummy and how he had behaved during Ambi's funeral.
Look at his behavior now!! Champion Chameleons ...
    Nonsense fellows...
    Mande illa eega Mandyaanu Ilaa...

Sumalatha should have got Congress ticket from Mandya. It is because HDK son she is deprived of seat. Too much family politics, HDK, his wife, brother, son etc.

Better to choose the right candidate like "easy to approach public" and "problems solver on time" (instead of actors).

    Vidhwaan Jossey Sir,

Ambareesh was a popular Kannada actor with lot of fan following in Mandya and old Mysore area... his first movie was 'Nagara Havu' directed by late Puttanna Kanagal….he acted as Villian named Jaleel...this was first Kannada movie I saw as a child...I still remember every scene of it clearly after long time...

Even though Ambareesh was saying he ' jumped Ullal River' more than 350 times...much more than 22 times of Bhandumaam...don't take his wife Sumalatha lightly...She is very well capable of defeating Gowda's Grandson easily in Mandya as BJPeee candidate...

Only fools take their rivals lightly...time will answer you here Sir...

    ...Tak..

Sumalatha can contribute to her constituency in different ways; no need to get disappointed. Probably, Congress could give her a better administrative position. JOINING BJP ... she will be doomed.
