Mangalore, Feb 14: The Daiji Dubai All India Konkani Drama Competition began here at Don Bosco Hall near Balmatta in the city on Saturday February 14. It was attended by an enthusiastic crowd in good numbers.

At a time when most people have written-off Konkani theatre activity in the city, the Daiji Dubai drama contest has rekindled new hope among playwrights and drama enthusiasts.

The first drama of the competition, ‘Konn Kitem Mhontta?’ by young playwright Shaan Bondel, who resides in Kuwait, was enacted by United Youngsters, Mangalore.

The play was directed by another well-known director Adolphus Coutinho (Dolla Manglur).

Popular compere of Mangalore, Leslie Rego was in the lead role of Avil, while Deepti Pais played his sister Anne.  Veteran actors Jossie Rego and Rita Fernandes played the parents of Avil, while Verginia Rodrigues was Isabelle and Aloysius D’Souza was Isabelle’s brother, who both work as servants at Avil’s house some time.

Alwyn Bajal, Praveen Gurpur, and Claud Bendore, assisted in stage setting, music, and background singing.

At 5:45 pm, Titus Noronha, convener of the competition, welcomed the gathering. All the six judges along with ‘Konkan Kogull’ Wilfy Rebimbus, who represented United Youngsters and Melvyn Rodrigues, founder member, Daiji Dubai, lit the lamp and inaugurated the six-day drama competition.
