CM Kumaraswamy meets PM Modi, seeks drought relief aid

Bengaluru/New Delhi, Mar 9 (IANS): Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and sought drought relief aid of Rs 2,064 crore for the southern state.

"As frequent droughts and erratic rainfall have made agriculture unsustainable in the state... I request you to expedite the process to release Rs 2,064 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund," Kumaraswamy said in a memorandum submitted to Modi.

The state has been reeling under drought due to scarce rainfall in the interior and northern districts and has also been affected due to the floods and landslides which hit Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru districts in August 2018.

Prolonged dry spells and deficit rainfall have caused severe drought in 100 of the 176 talukas (sub-districts) in the state, Kumaraswamy informed the Prime Minister.

Pegging the losses incurred due to the drought situation at Rs 16,500 crore, the state government had asked the Centre for an assistance of Rs 2,434 crore, but was granted only Rs 949.49 crore in January, he said.

"Crop loss during kharif and rabi seasons altogether is Rs 32,335 crore, which has had adverse effect on the state's economy," the Chief Minister said.

Kumaraswamy also sought Rs 1,351 crore towards the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy should stop begging Prime Minister Modi.

Karnataka is the third highest contributor to direct taxes. When it comes to tax sharing formula the 15th finance commission considers the obsolete 2011 Census data for tax revenue sharing among states, a move that puts South Indian states at a disadvantage as they have lower population growth than North Indian states.
When Prime Minister Modi took the office, Karnataka’s share was Rs 60,595.22 crore in 2014-15 when the total direct tax collection was Rs 6.96 lakh crore.
The alleged ‘injustice’ to bolster its case that the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made no contribution to the progress of Karnataka.
“Moves like Hindi imposition, ignoring vernacular, cultural and regional diversity, or tacit efforts to favour the North over the South by creating a rift within federal constituents, is weakening cooperative federalism instead of strengthening it,".
Mr.Kumaraswamy, Kerala was hit by floods worst than Karnataka. But in just two weeks 20 lakh electrical connections restored by the state government. All the Keralites and worked as a team to help the worst affect household.
We need to move forward in our own 'Karnataka Model' so that state revenue remains with us. If our own HAL is ignored which served the nation for 80 years what you can expect from Prime Minister Modi for Karnataka?

Don't try to divide India by North and South. Why you have not given the figure after 2014?, it clearly shows Karnataka was getting more than in 2014 in next years.you can't select the census as per ur choice. In federal structure it is the center which rules the country. As per ur logic tomorrow Mnglr which contributes more than Bidar /Gulbarga /Bellary can claim that the funds collected should be used here and not to North Karnataka /Hyd karnataka

very sad to see opportunistic party with 30 seats has this guy as CM in the name of democracy. Very difficult accept JDS administer the state. Appa maga party... At least congress should have taken administration with JDS supporting... Congress continues to become weaker party ... they have to think long term and become a strong part at national level instead of just getting hung up on Modi and BJP. Strong leadership in Congress would have helped to revive. They have great young leaders like Sachin pilot and come out of the shadow and Gandhi and family. It is a great opportunity to take head on BJP instead of trying to somehow grab power... no long term strategy.....

point is if BJP has done it or not. if you look at BJP they are trying to spread across nation. but congress is becoming weaker by trying to tie up with anybody without any vision. need to make choice if it needs to strengthen as national party or become big regional party....

in the last 2014 loksabha election congress vote share 20% and bjp 30% this was happened during the most difficult times of the congress party. From the last 2 years assembly elections Congress vote share was more than Bjp vote share. This shows that congress is improving even Bjp also tied up with akali dal in Punjab and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu and JDU,LJP in Bihar and Shiva Sena in Maharastra but congress ultimate aim is to defeat bjp in next coming loksabha election
