Mangaluru, Mar 9: Doctors of neurosurgery unit of Srinivas Medical College Hospital, Mukka, Surathkal have performed a complex neurosurgical procedure on a 43-year old mother of two and a resident of Suragiri village near Kinnigoli.
In a press meet held at Medical College, Dr Deepak Suraparaju who led the neurosurgical procedures said that the patient named Rathna was brought to the hospital with a history of drowsiness, severe headache, confusion, weakness on right side of body and was in a bedridden state. On being admitted to the hospital, an MRI scan of the brain showed a very large tumor (occupying almost 25-30% of intracranial space) causing severely raised intracranial pressure and compression of important areas of brain responsible for limb movements, speech, consciousness and memory.
The patient underwent a complex neurosurgery lasting over 8 hours with use of advanced operative microscope and monitoring devices. The surgical procedure was performed by neurosurgeon Dr Deepak Suraparaju and team of well trained anesthesiologists and support staff.
“Post surgery, the patient has recovered well. Within two days of surgery she was able to carry out all her activities without any support. Scans show 100% removal of tumor, which is likely to mean that she is completely cured of the disease and will not need any further radiation or chemotherapy. She is fit for discharge within five days of the surgery,” Dr Deepak Suraparaju said.
Expressing satisfaction with the results of the surgery, he added, “It is important for the public to be aware that with the current advances in neurosurgical treatments it is possible to achieve complete cure and early recovery even with rare or large brain tumors, especially when early diagnosis is made. Hence, people are advised to seek specialist’s opinion for complaints such as sudden or recent change in character of headache, unexplained drowsiness, visual blurring, double vision, vomiting, memory loss etc.”
