Questioning polls during Ramadan shows opposition desperation: BJP

New Delhi, Mar 11 (IANS): The BJP on Monday targeted Opposition parties for raising questions on holding elections during Ramadan, saying their comments were an indication of their "desperation" in the face of imminent defeat.

"I saw a lot of sponsored comments notably from Mamataji (Mamata Banerjee) and some others that Ramadan is going to be effected due to election programme. I would like to gently remind these leaders. Don't be desperate. Even Holi and Chait Navratra are falling during the elections," Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.

The Union Minister said that bypolls to Kairana and some other constituencies took place during Ramadan.

"The comments of the leaders are an indication of their desperation as they fear imminent defeat," said Prasad.

Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee as well as some leaders from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have expressed their displeasure over the Lok Sabha election schedule -- three final phases of which are falling during Ramadan -- saying it will inconvenience the fasting voters.

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, however, has rejected the concerns and slammed parties for raking up the issue needlessly.

The EC’s decision to hold three phases of elections during Ramadan has come as a surprise to many in light of CEC Sunil Arora’s own statement that the national poll body had factored in ‘examination dates, religious occasions, harvest seasons and inputs from weather department’ before announcing the dates for the Lok Sabha polls.
In total, 169 seats will see polling in the last three phases of the Lok Sabha elections which will fall during the fasting month of Ramadan for Muslims.
As for West Bengal, where the BJP has been desperately trying to gain a foothold to compensate for the possible losses in north India, polling for 42 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases with 24 of them being scheduled for the last three phases.
The Election Commission’s decision to hold three phases of elections during the Holy month of Ramadan, when Muslim voters will be observing dawn-to-dusk fast. At this time of the year, North India experience scorching heat with extreme weather condition. The absence of a little percentage of Muslim voters in North India is indirectly going to help BJP.
Anyway, fasting is obligatory on Muslims. they cook, work, clean & take care of their families while fasting. It’s an insult to Muslims to say that Ramzan will affect voting. According to Islamic belief Ramzan, Shaitan is enchained – 'God Willing ' one will use their vote to defeat his agents.

BJP's idea of scheduling polls during Muslim fasting month of Ramadan is back firing on BJP. Even Muslim women will desert BJP in spite of much hiped media savvy triple Talaaq without legality. This gorilla is clueless and fully disoriented.
