Udupi: CMC wasting water during supply, contractors looting money - Kodankoor residents

Udupi, Apr 1: The water shortage issues faced by the residents of Kodankoor village are not being addressed by the Udupi City Municipality Council, alleged Mass India NGO president G A Koteyar.

Addressing a press meet on Monday, April 1, he said that the deputy commissioner directed the CMC to provide water to the village once in three days. However, CMC is not responding to the problems, he lashed out.

Koteyar highlighted the need to clean the public wells in the city and added that after repeated complaints only a few were cleaned by the CMC.

Questioning the expenses shown by CMC with regard to water supply last year, Koteyar expressed doubts if they were genuine.

“The expense shown is Rs 95 lacs. But we got water only 5 to 6 times in tankers. Was Rs 95 lacs spent on water supply?” he questioned and demanded action against the council engineer for wasting water. “There is a need to bring control over supplying excessive flow of water in wards. Otherwise it could be loss to the council,” he lashed out.

“The Council pump operators have failed to monitor the water supply. Water is wasted. At our home, we have capacity of collecting 1000 liters of water in tanks. But the excess supply of water has created problem today. Though we complained to respective councillor, they are not bothered. Let DC take charge of CMC administration. Councillors are expressing their helplessness. We do not need water the entire day, because we have no storage facility to store water. Pump operator open gate wall from morning 5 to 10am. If they give water for 2 hours with full pressure that is enough," Rajesh one of the residents of Kodankoor urged.

Rajesh expressed doubt about water expenditure report. “Definitely this is a money making plan and the contractors are looting money. Since three days, the upper area people are not getting water due to low pressure,” he alleged.

Ashok Kumar, a local from Kodankoor said, “When Pramod Madhwaraj was the MLA, he made sure that water is supplied through tankers. But now no one is taking care of these issues. Sitting MP Shobha Karandlaje is not seen in the constituency in the last five years. There is no proper electric pole facility. Even several months after the local bodies’ election, members of council could not take the charge so far. If this apathy continues, then what is the need for election? We will boycott election.”

Geetha Suvarna, member of Mass India and Raviraj, president, Mass India were present.
