M’lore: Dist Administration Removes Banners, Buntings, Flags as per EC Directives

Mangalore, Mar 12: The district administration on Thursday March 12 started to remove all religious and political advertisements, hoardings, banners, buntings, posters, flags, and stickers, from public places in the district as a step towards enforcing the model code of conduct for the general elections.
The drive was carried out by the district administration following directions received from the Election Commission. The personnel of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) removed all the banners, buntings, and flags of the ‘Hindu Samajotsava’ to be held in the city on Sunday March 15.
These were put up by the Dharma Raksha Vedike after receiving an order from the deputy commissioner (DC) V Ponnuraj.
The district administration has formed teams to remove such displays from public places.
The Election Commission officials in the district will book cases against those who violate the laws. The cases will be booked under provisions in the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act 1981.
Such displays on public transport vehicles are also prohibited as per the code of conduct. But the restrictions do not apply to advertisements on private vehicles with white number plates.
Violators of this will be booked under provisions in Rule 127 of the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Rules.
It can be recalled that banners and a makeshift entrance put up by an organization on account of Milad-un-Nabi on Tuesday March 10, were removed by the MCC.
