Bengaluru: Upset over ignoring Christians in ticket allocation, Sangliana quits Congress

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Apr 8: Disappointed with the Congress for not giving Lok Sabha election ticket to a member of the Christian community, former MP H T Sangliana has quit the Congress, both as the vice-president of KPCC and from its primary membership.

In his resignation letter to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Sangliana said, "I cherish the moments that we have spent together in parliament in the past. I have selflessly worked for the party since 2008, and today I feel sad that the Congress party has lost its focus and neglected the minority Christian community.

"I am deeply pained by the this indifferent attitude towards the Christian community and had conveyed the feelings of Christians in Karnataka to Priyanka Gandhi a year ago as per your (Rahul Gandhi's) directions when you were campaigning in Madhya Pradesh.

"Today, not even a single seat among 28 from Karnataka is given to the Christian community. The state Congress leadership, as well the high command, has completely sidelined the Christians, and pro-rata representations has not been considered during the allocation of parliamentary tickets from INC," he wrote.

A former director general of police (DGP), Sangliana had been aspirant for the Lok Sabha ticket from Bengaluru Central or Bengaluru North. When he was denied the ticket, he had convened a press conference and threatened to contest as an independent. However, ultimately, he decided to remain silent and did not file nomination.

Both Bengaluru North and Bengaluru Central have a big number of voters from the minority communities, especially Christians. Sangliana's resignation may have an adverse impact on Congress' prospects, say sources.

I don't think that Christians will get quickly offended for any silly Reasons. That is why I strongly believe that many of my Hindu friends have migrated to Christian countries to live a comfortable life there.

I believe Mr. Sangliana’s reaction is uncalled for.

Being a former DGP, he should know that working for the people is beyond man-made religious beliefs and should not promote or display such attitude that will divide the people.

An aspiring politician should be a good human being first - followed by affiliation towards the nation of birth who is ready to serve the people without considering religious beliefs, cast, creed or any other man made socio-economic disparity.

Why do people look at religion as a basis for everything? The British divided us on religious grounds. Why do we still follow the same principle? Can’t we think beyond and rationally?

Ha ha ha... good you realized this that Congress is just using the minority appeasement cards for its votebank politics and development of family. But the only problem is there are many Christians from karavli area who comment in this forum who have not yet understood this. Hope almighty gives them some intelligence,

Minority Christians are well protected by secular minded Hindus, than christian leaders in many cases. There are unbiased and broad minded non Christians who hold offices in Govt. Let us strengthen the hands of the secular leaders. No doubt,Christians need representation in politics but our number is less.Resignation does more damage than good in this context.Fighting from within is better than quitting.

BJP gave him a chance, he became MP but then he backstabbed the BJP.

By the way neither any political party nor any politicians are the well wishers or savious of Christians, this we need to understand at first. They do drama only during elections to get votes by projecting themselves as the well wishers of the community.

No one should expect special treatment; just expect fair treatment as provided in our constitution, that's all.
If we recollect all noblemen, they never expected favour; it's a kind of slavery.
Problem with many is over expectation at the cost of others, out of turn, Gas connection, tickets, ministry. Expecting favours, not fair play. I think our value systems are steadily eroding!

    Prashant,
No Christians generally hate any Hindu or Muslim.
Modi in the past has spot a lot against Christians.
LK Advani, was a hardliner but he didn't speak against Christians.
Another reason could be we generally dislike Hardliners!
In democracy hardliners don't fit in.

Rightly said, "Religion should not be mixed with politics". Unfortunately our politicians can't do their politics without mixing religion, especially naming religions during campaigning, announcing benefits to a particular community, appeasing one community at the expense of the other, favouring one caste and neglecting the other and so on which is totally unheard of in western democracies.

Neither a Hindu nor a Muslim, or to that matter any religion hates each other's religion. A few politicians divide the society by sowing the seed of hatred for their political gains. People have lived relatively peaceful after the independence until the "Rath Yathra" was initiated in 1980's by a political leader whose only dream was to be a PM. He never succeeded and never will.

Sangliana is right. The essence of democracy is inclusion of all kind of minorities in the governance. It is very sad to note that a prominent minority (Christians) were left out despite their immense contributions to the society. Perhaps the winning party can nominate a few Christian legislators to the the parliament.

Any leader who talks about religion, caste, region etc isn't a leader. And more than anything right now everyone is trying to fight the bigger evil which is haunting our country, if not democracy won't remain for long, and that's why sacrifices like these will have to be made.

Vinay, let's enjoy our Canada rather worrying about discrimination based on religion and caste of our own Indians brothers and sister within the same country. Christian's contributions to India is greatest then any others in India but too much descrimination towards Christian's in India is a shame. Thank god we live and enjoy Canada freely and proudly without any fear.
We call Canada proudly home. That is the spirit any citizen deserve in any country of its citizens
