In a twitter video that has gone viral, a man wearing a checkered shirt is seen chanting ‘Modi, Modi’ when Matondkar arrives for campaigning. The crowd also joins him in supporting Prime Minister Modi. At around 20 seconds, Congress supporters can be seen walking towards the BJP supporting crowd while shouting ‘chowkidar chor hai’. Urmila can also be heard asking them to calm down. The sloganeering soon escalated and some of the BJP and the Congress workers came to blows.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Urmila said, "We were peacefully addressing people and from nowhere 15-20 people came and started shouting slogans. I didn't react to it and thought these things keep on happening and signaled them to let go. But they all started vulgar dancing and using abusive language. They probably wanted to scare the women who were walking near us... Then a fight broke out and they even assaulted the women. From the first day I am saying their politics is of hatred. I won't let this happen in Mumbai."
Expressing shock at the incident, Urmila later tweeted that she has filed a complaint and sought police protection over the incident.
"Shocked at the blatant violation of code of conduct and hostile acts by BJP workers. I was constrained to lodge police complaint for my own safety and to save the dignity of my female supporters," she tweeted.
